Barnett Friedman (1901-1958), English painter, designer & typographer - he spent his sickly childhood in a hospital bed and learned reading, writing and art in the hospital, not at school. He was poor and had to find a job at the age of 15 or 16, but his talent was recognized by the principal, who recommended him directly to the University of Fine Arts. From there, his path opened up.
