House of Open Wounds is a book very full of entertaining beats and dynamics that are really difficult to explain why they're so amusing without several paragraphs of context.
So to not even try; deeply charmed by the bit where a succubus is sent by the conjurer whose bound her to corrupt and ruin the faith of a priest (as a bit of petty spite over losing a fencing match to his boss/overseer in the army, mostly) only for him to somewhat awkwardly explain that he's not technically a priest and he and his god have really had a more 'it's complicated' thing going for several years now. So not actually any oaths to break, properly speaking.
To which her response is more or less 'huh, cool. Got a deck of cards or a smoke? If I phrase this right I can probably get ordered to come back and try again every night for at least a week."
I love settings where gods can be just pathetic little guys. Yeah I met this gecko the other day and it told me at length of it's past glories, fallen temples and great rites then suggested I give it some blood sacrifice to revive its godly power. I wasn't interested but was too awkward to say so. I just started walking faster and faster until it's little legs couldn't keep up with me, now I have to take the long way home in case it's still there.
I love the covers of the tyrant philosophers books
Where so many books are doing just an image of an object or animal, some symbolism or a person holding a weapon or something like that, the artist for these (someone called joe wilson) decided to instead just cover the cover with... everything
And it's really neat because once you've read the book you can point at all the features and go, oh it's that guy! The frog on days of shattered faith is Kakrops!
Tyrant Philosophers Gang!
Did you know that Mr. Tchaikovsky "fan" casted this series(plus his other books as well) and yall!
Plus the castings for the other books in the series
Where is the Tyrant Philosophers fandom??? I need to scream about Alv and Tallifer!!!
not gonna lie I was deeply upset upon learning that pallesand had won its war with the loruthi at the start of days of shattered faith, but I think I’m onboard with that decision now. so much more fun to watch the sway slowly rot and bleed itself to death from the inside.
congratulations! you won the war! it will be your undoing!
anyway looking forward to the palleseen century of humiliation. going to be fun to see how they handle the means of production being ripped out from under them without warning.
also Aspel Tyrantphilosophers and Disra Childrenoftime should meet up for drinks sometime.
I think Angilly is so far the most fleshed out and beautiful Tchaikovsky character I've read about so far, I can't wait for Lives of Bitter Rain.
(I've read Children of Time, Doors of Eden, and City of Last Chances/Days of Shattered Faith rn, working through house of open wounds)
any other Tchaikovsky with good queer/women characters? I love Loret and Dr Khan and Lee and Mal, I need moooore
