This is how I want Tyrant Sun to be:

I want him to be the type of character who is actually right, but is still seen as wrong by the protagonist. He stands firmly by his beliefs and doesn’t change his mind just because of what others say. I want him to be stronger than an Astral—strong enough that their relationship is built on mutual respect. He should be the one who picks up the responsibilities the Overseer failed to handle.

He has no hesitation and no moral conflict when it comes to removing anomalies—child or not, no one is safe from him. I don’t want him to be connected to Dark Sun or anything like that. I want him to be even more mysterious than the Overseer, maybe even someone the Overseer secretly fears.

I don’t want him to have a tragic backstory either. Instead of being a poor Sun who was abused by their Moon or Eclipse, I want this role to be seen as his destiny, something he embraces without trauma or pity.

Tyrant Sun Notes #1: The Council of Light

In a typing mood so I’m going to type up some of the basic setting info I’ve started working out for a 5E campaign I’ve been working on that I’d like to run in the post-OCS future. 

Working title is “Tyrant Sun” 

Central conceit is this is a setting where the typical maxim of light=good, dark=evil is reversed which changing the mechanical associations. This world is tyrannized by the rule of the Sun itself, which long ago sent down an Celestial host to impose dominion over the world.

The Luminarium - The Empire of the Pitiless Sun

Over the course of millennia the Luminarium has spread its rule over numerous nations, subsuming their governments, resources and people into their own, expatriating them around the dominion.

The Spectrum Council - The Seven Colors of Light

 At the highest echelon of the Luminarium, The Spectrum Council is divided into seven divisions, six associated with one of each additive color (red, blue, green, yellow, cyan, magenta) and the overseeing body associate with white light) Each council has several hundred councilors, assigned to cities and provinces they oversee, and three High Councilors, who claim a ‘virtue’ as a title and symbolic representation of their goals for humanity. 

 Red-Light Council -  The Vanguard of War. 

Representing the Sun’s heat and wrath, the Red Council is ruled by Justice, Zeal, and Fortitude. The Red Council oversees matters of armed conflict and expansion. For the Shaded Nations remaining in the world and all those who live outside of the Luminarium’s control, the searing red of this host is the first and last most see of the Celestial Host. 

Green-Light Council -  The Gardeners of Life

Representing nature’s dependence on Solar energy. The Green Council lure humanoid races into joining Luminarium-controlled regions with promises of plenty. They tightly control the use of land and the use of nature-based magic. They are ruled by Solars named Growth, Harmony, and Patience

Blue-Light Council - The Revealers of Truth

The Blue council represents Light’s ability to Reveal. They pry and spy into the lives of all who live within the Luminarium’s borders, ever seeing to reveal any and secrets. The Blue Council tempts humanity with the desire for knowledge, even if it is not necessary or invasive. The Solars ruling this council are Truth, Prudence, and Wisdom

Yellow-Light Council - The Clergy of Blessings

The Yellow-Light Council represent light magic’s ability to bolster. The administrative body of the Church of Sol, a religious organization that rewards its most faithful with blessings from it’s mortal clergy or, with much pomp and circumstance, from the Celestial Host itself. The church is centered in tenets of loyalty, fealty, and denying oneself their desires. Ruled by Charity, Faith, and Kindness

Cyan Council - The Coalition of Healing 

Ostensibly oversee the practice of medicine in the Luminarium, The Coalition of Healing also is the overseeing body of humanoid experimentation. They march ever towards making mankind more in line with The Sun’s decree for physical purity. They are ruled by Progress, Forgiveness, and Chastity

Magenta Council - The Binding Legion

Represents Light magic’s ability to bind and restrict magic. The Magenta council seeks to control and limit Humanity’s capacity for unregulated magic and maintain a peaceful populace. The most inquisitorial of the councils. Ruled by Solars named Humility, Temperance, and Diligance

The White-Light Overseers

Oversee the broad initiatives the Celestial Host takes to control and ultimately, destroy humanity. Ruled by the High Solars, Peace, Safety, and Purity. The three Solars with direct contact to the Tyrant Sun

Overall the Luminarium seeks to appear utopic in order to lure humanity into pledging subservience. They promise plenty, blessings, healing, safety and security in exchange for the loss of secrecy, personal freedoms, etc. 

I don’t intend to be subtle about this being a condemnation of totalitarianism and the notion of nations as homogenous organisms justifying the destruction of peoples and cultures. 

Light in the world of Tyrant Sun represents the passing of control to others. It is largely depicted as invasive, destructive, and inhuman. It is devoid of genuine compassion and seeks to impose control over people’s past, present, and future. 

There are a few who use a “Un-Solar Light” in the same way there are fantasy works with people who use Darkness despite not being evil. In this context the light plays the idea of selflessness and magic using this light always imposes harsh side effects on its users, such as healing causing them the pain their patient felt when inflicted with the wound, of bolstering magic inducing weakness in the caster. Wielding Light in this way demands a certain commitment to the values it can represent, but always carries to risk of falling to the allure of personal gain or succumbing to outside influence.
