A Greek garden bearing gifts

The English urban planning professor who, in the 1960s, acquired land on a bare, overgrazed hillside just outside Athens knew the score. She gave it 20 years for “suburbanisation” to reach her slice of countryside that overlooked the wide Mesoghia plain.

In the meantime she set to, planting species from both Greece and further afield – anything that could cope with the hot, dry summer climate and poor, shallow soil. She built a nuggety stone house at a time when everyone else was embracing reinforced concrete. Gradually neighbours – and more recently an airport and highway too – came, just as she envisaged.

What Mary Jaqueline Tyrwhitt – or Jacky, as she was called – didn’t foresee though was that 10 years after her death, her house and garden would become the headquarters of a society devoted to gardening in places with summer-dry climates.

Since 1994, the Mediterranean Garden Society (MGS) has continued where Tyrwhitt left off, experimenting with plants from such places as Greece, South Africa, California, Mexico and Australia that stand up to high temperatures and the dry, rocky and, in the case of this garden, alkaline conditions.

It’s now possible to take a bus from downtown Athens and be at the botanically rich garden, which can only be visited by society members, within 45 minutes.

Called Sparoza and presided over by Irish-born Sally Razelou, one of the MGS founders who has been the garden’s custodian since 1992, it cuts a modest presence at the top of a street filled with big houses and barbed-wire-topped fences.

Sparoza’s unirrigated rocky “phrygana” spills all the way to the pavement. Strewn with flowers in spring (think Asphodelus aestivus, Iris tuberosa, Anemone coronaria) and autumn (cyclamens, Drimia maritima, Prospero autumnale), come summer this area is all olives, rosemary and succulents.
