22 year old Seattle artist, Tytuus delivers a double EP, Songs About Me/Songs About You, that dives deep into the emotional core of the up and coming artist. As the newest edition to Crushkill Records, Tytuus continues to push himself creatively as this Double EP does an excellent job of showing off his range.
The first EP, Songs About Me, plays out like a “hood gothic” love letter. Tales of broken hearts and depression are very apparent throughout the mostly slower, more melancholy production provided by the likes of Sloth.Toes and Amotbeats. Songs like “Who” have Tytuus gliding over dark beats with an auto tuned assisted voice and desolate lyrics. “Roses” acts as a standout track as the 22 year old hits us with powerful self-aware lyrics over creeping boom bap drums and eerie synths. Overall, the first EP is a far departure from Tytuus’ previous works but more than welcome.
The second EP, Songs About Her is the more accessible of the two projects. With more mainstream and popular production, Tytuus still bears his soul all over the EP, but this go around features a more “modern” sound. Songs like “Underestimate” tap directly into the popular, wavy, autotuned infused sound that is being championed by a lot of up and coming mainstream artists. “Disease” gives a lot of insight into the mind of Tytuus as lyrics like “If you want be my woman, you gotta get with my disease,” exposing deep flaws in Tytuus’ psyche. While Songs About Me is more abstract and arguably more artistic, Songs About Her acts as the more accessible of the two projects.
These two EPs doing of great job of showcasing the pain that Tytuus has clearly gone through over the last couple of years, anyone going through recent mental strife might find these projects to be cathartic. However, if you are looking for something more “turn up” or “high energy” than this isn’t the project for you.
Overall, Tyuus bears his soul all over these two EPs, showing the world that he has an incredible range, sonically. While Songs About Her is the more current and digestible of the two, they are both worth a solid listen as Tytuus shows us that there is no ceiling to his artistic passions.
