URPRISE!!! THIS YEAR AT APIRG WE ARE ABLE TO GIVE YOU ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN RESOURCES FOR THE WONDERFUL EVENTS AND PROJECTS YOU ARE WORKING ON OR DREAMING OF!!! Funding can look like lots of things, from monetary support ( for speakers, venues, food, accesibility concerns, etc) to non-monetary support (photocopying, meeting space, network support, high-fives). So take a moment to think about what APIRG can do to support you, your communities and the INCREDIBLE work you do/want to do. As per our mission statement, APIRG provides students and community members with funding for research and social engagement projects working in the public interest. In addition to funding, APIRG provides administrative, informational and technological resources to help students transform social concern into effective action. We also facilitate opportunities for skill development through internships, educational events, public campaigns and partnerships with community organizations. Student Governance Officer

The Student Governance Officer (SGO) reports to the Student Governance Advisor as part of the Discover Governance team (www.su.ualberta.ca/discover). The Student Governance Officer works to improve the quality and effectiveness of all levels of student governance at the University of Alberta. This is achieved through the provision of administrative support to committees chaired by the SU Vice President Academic and through the provision of advisory and support services to individuals and groups involved in all levels of University governance. This role is explicitly intended to be facilitatory in nature, providing service in a non-politicized manner. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Develop and maintain open, two-way communications with representatives to keep representatives connected with each other and with Discover Governance. 2. Maintain regularly updated social media presence connecting users with the Discover Governance program and the Students’ Union’s representative activities. 3. Promote the activities of Discover Governance and student representatives to the wider campus community and assist the Student Governance Advisor in building relationships with University community stakeholders. 4. Maintain professional relationships with student representatives through a blend of in-person and online contact with the aim of facilitating the development communities of practice within the student representative community. 5. Maintain up-to-date contact information for members of the Council of Faculty Associations and students serving in other governance capacities at the University of Alberta. 6. Assist the Student Governance Advisor in supporting Faculty Associations in their individual and coordinated advocacy efforts on an as-needed basis. 7. Assist the Student Governance Advisor with providing an orientation to University governance and other forms of ongoing professional development opportunities. 8. Organize an annual changeover retreat, including orientation materials and programming, with supervisory support from the Student Governance Advisor. 9. Provide support and information on issues, projects or meetings within the scope of their representation to students serving as delegates of the Students’ Union Executive Committee. 10. Provide administrative support, such as taking minutes, booking space, and organizing materials for the Council of Faculty Associations meetings and functions. 11. Provide administrative support, such as taking minutes, booking space, liaising with presenters, and organizing materials for the General Faculties Council Student Caucus. 12. Provide information on University of Alberta governance processes and professional development resources suitable to student representatives as requested. 13. Undertake projects within the Discover Governance program framework that will benefit the activities of student representatives. 14. Conduct research on historical trends and best practices in University and non-profit governance. 15. Perform all duties with impartiality and with respect for the integrity of governance processes. Union exempt. Terms This is a term position running from May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014. May – August 2013: 40 hours/week, salary $2265/month September 2013 – April 2014: 25 hours/week, salary $1510/month Qualifications: • Must be a University of Alberta undergraduate student registered in a minimum of one course for credit in each of the Fall and Winter terms in the 2013-2014 academic year, and paid Students’ Union fees in full. • Experience working in and/or with student groups. • Excellent communication (both written and oral), and interpersonal skills. • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. • Experience using office computer software and internet-based applications including social media • Experience with recruitment and volunteer management. • Willingness and ability to work varying hours and a commitment to working posted office hours acceptable to the Student Governance Advisor. • Experience as a student representative is an asset. • Experience with and understanding of University governance processes is an asset.
