I totes see Elphie as Ravenclaw, but I can also see her as Slytherin. She's both smart and ambitious and values both of those traits.
I think Elphaba is ultimately a Ravenclaw because at the end of the day the song "no good deed" reveals her inner most emotions. She asks "was I really seeking good or only seeking attention?" and attention seeking/need for validation is a huuuge Ravenclaw thing. I think she struggles the most in understanding the difference between good/bad and what each mean, its a such a philosophical trip so I would place her in Ravenclaw.
Just a quick question, if I was to want to read Leroux in the original French, would there be copies I should avoid (like weird abridged ones)? Or to flip the question the other way, would there be an edition that you recommend?
Hi there! Thanks for your question. You can pick up a copy of the Livre de Poche (Pocketbooks) edition of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra for not too much money on Amazon.com or Amazon.fr. That is an unabridged replica of the text from the 1st edition (complete with typos :P).
If you are able, however, I’d recommend picking up the Robert Laffont edition of Le Fantôme (it also includes several of Leroux’s other novels, as well). It has supplementary materials, such an interview with Leroux where he talked about his literary influences, and a press release that Leroux wrote in 1925 to coincide with the Phantom silent film in which he made a very nudge-nudge-wink-wink statement that everything in his novel was true. ;) The Robert Laffont edition will run you a bit more. It is €26,03 not including shipping. It’s the version I’m using for my translation, since it’s also an edition that is officially recognized by Leroux’s estate.
