Beth and Daryl enjoy the first real spring day. All the signs of new life has Beth feeling a little emotional...and with good reason.

After all, she was just a girl.
Just Maggie’s sister. Just Judith’s babysitter. Just one piece of a larger whole, who only mattered because she was connected to the rest, and insignificant in her own right.
Just another dead girl.
Just gone.

Beth sighed and put a smile on her face - being a bitch of a barista didn't get you any tips, she turned towards the customers. "Hi, how are ya' today," she said with fake cheer.
Two men stood at the counter in front of her. Merle and Daryl Dixon.

The world population has died off. Now, years later, the Population Regrowth Agenda - an initiative to help the world population expand once again by forcing men and women between certain ages to be paired up with one another and procreate - has taken over and Beth Greene has just hit the available age limit.

Sometimes, scars are what you need to know the wound has healed and you’re still living. Beth uses that knowledge to inform her next move.

Beth could hardly contain her excitement as she zipped up her hoodie and worked her feet into her hiking boots. It was the first real spring day, but not the First Day of Spring. That had come and gone over a week ago. No, today was one where the sun was shining, the birds were singing, flowers blooming, and the air was crisp but not cold. It had been a long winter, and it seemed like Mother Nature was having a hard time of letting go of the cold temperatures and rainy days.
She stood up and wiggled her toes in her hiking boots, the ones Daryl insisted she wear if she wanted to go ‘traipsin’ through the woods’ with him. After arranging her long blonde curls into a messy bun, Beth walked through their cozy little cottage toward the back porch where Daryl was doing one final check on his crossbow before they went on their long-anticipated walk. (Well, long-anticipated for her. Daryl didn’t seem to mind the cold and rainy weather and would go out hunting at least once a week, come hell or high water. Beth, on the other hand, was much more content staying where it was warm and hot cocoa was readily available. That’s not to say she didn’t enjoy being outdoors, just not when the air hurt to breathe because it was so frigidly cold.)
“Ready to go, Mr. Dixon?” she smiled at him after taking a deep breath, filling her nose with the smell of the earth, the fresh air, the scent of springtime.
Daryl adjusted the strap for his crossbow onto his shoulder and crossed the porch to stand by her, taking her hand in his. “Sure am, Mrs. Dixon,” he grinned at her and kissed her on the cheek before they walked together off their porch and into the wilderness surrounding their house.

(this is my very first story in TWD/Bethyl fandom, please be kind! I´m also very eager to hear any kind of feedback :) )
Nobody always gets what they want. There's always something. The trick is to find a way to be happy with what you already have and you will always have exactly what you need. Isn't it how it's supposed to work? Beth´s thought about what she wants very intensely for the past two months. When it suddenly got so terribly cold in February that Daryl couldn't make his way home, sent Aaron to Alexandria three weeks ago and stayed behind to make up for the time they had been hiding from storms. Every day Beth would take a watch, silently but anxiously looking out for Daryl. Isolated with her thoughts she would distance herself from everyone who tried to comfort her. The uncertainty slowly ate away Beth´s sanity, hollowing her out until she couldn't stand it anymore and asked Jesus to take her to Hilltop on his trip back there.
She´s found much-needed solace in Maggie, welcoming the change of the environment after being holed up in Alexandria the whole winter. The Hilltop residents have decided to cultivate more of the land behind the wall, further towards the woodland, and to turn it into potato fields, hopefully, or at least vegetable patches. Beth also comes to hang laundry here, on the rope that she stretched between two crooked oak trees that grow here lonely, far away from the forest.
Today the white sheets are flapping happily, and Beth stands leaning against one of the oaks, watching two ravens fly above her head in the direction of the forest. She's been hiding in her head since the early morning, feeling oddly content after a long while, letting thoughts swirl through her mind freely without dwelling on them too much. She feels a tugging at the corner of her mouth without any apparent reason. Maybe because her stomach is full and she's got warm clothes to wear and hot water to shower with. It's the “being happy with what you already have”.
So it is that when she hears steps behind her and feels two strong arms around her shoulders, she cannot believe that having Daryl back would be added to the list of things she can have now.
They collide into each other. Paralysed with the flood of pure relief Beth wouldn't be able to speak anyway. Daryl pulls her close, lifting her off her feet and setting her carefully down. He doesn't let go, kissing the crown of her head, burying his face in the crook of her neck.
“I didn't know ya would be here. Went to Alexandria first,” he says, his voice as raspy as Beth remembers. The words are muffled by Beth´s jacket but she understands nonetheless.
“Yeah. I wanted to see Maggie. And check the plants, take some seedlings with me. The soil is better here. Things grow better,” she nods towards the row of blue saffron peeking from the pale green grass.
Daryl complies, glancing over his shoulder to see and then back again to finally look at Beth. For one tiny moment she's worried that she's going to burst into tears, having him back and all. But she manages to just smile, so wide that her cheeks hurt.
“Your hair´s longer,” Daryl states, taking one blonde strand in his fingers. The sunshine reflects in the texture, making it seem like a stream of liquid gold. He brings it to his lips, his nose, inhaling Beth´s scent. They stand like that in the late March breeze for a long moment, Daryl´s forehead against the side of Beth´s head, their hair swishing around their faces.
Daryl´s hands find her waist under her jacket. “You´ve put on weight,” he says, voice laced with odd tenderness. Beth feels his smile against her cheek, her neck.
She nods. The winter had been kind to them, with enough supplies to throw a Christmas and New Years combination party. In the middle of snow storms and wood chopping and music classes her body remembered the old ways of fat storing - easy when you don't burn all the energy in an immediate chase with death.
“Any - chupacabras?” she asks him after they detangle, teasing carefully.
Beth laughs out loud, the sound literally tearing out of her throat, ringing around them. She takes Daryl's hand and they begin to walk to the gate. She notices how worn out and tired he looks but doesn't want to talk about it yet. She can imagine the kind of time he had out there, the mere thought sending a pang through her chest. She wants him safe all the time.
Beth ducks closer as they walk slowly. “Wanna know why I've put on weight?” she whispers and without waiting for Daryl´s answer, she brings the hand she's been holding and presses his big palm against her lower belly, above the waistband of her worn jeans. She bites her lip in anticipation. She's imagined telling him many times in the past month, weirdly calm about it. Some things cannot be changed in any way. This being one of them.
It doesn't take more than three seconds - not that Beth´s counting under her breath - and Daryl's eyes snap to hers, pausing midstep. She could probably count on the fingers of one hand how many times she's seen Daryl Dixon truly surprised.
She lets out another loud, joyous laugh full of relief and arches her eyebrow - half jokingly, half in challenge.
Daryl hugs her tight, arms squeezing her. It's a bit difficult and she feels ridiculous while they are both dressed in their big, clumsy winter jackets.

This photo edit is a companion piece to another Bethyl wedding edit I shared what seems like ages ago. Spring always makes me think of weddings...what two people become when they are joined together, the beautiful thing they grow to be.
It also seems fitting to share for the Spring "Regrowth" event hosted by @ultimatebethylficlist
