I’m mad (yet sadly not surprised) to learn that Ubisoft is planning on disabling VOIP in The Division 2 Dark Zone in the name of “combating toxicity”. There are plenty of other more reasonable ways of combating toxicity in VOIP, most of which are even in The Division 1.

You can mute players already, and disable VOIP altogether if that’s not your thing. The only things I can think of to take this a step further that wouldn’t be damaging to the game itself would be to make it so muting a player is permanent so that even if you log out and back in that player won’t be unmuted unless you manually do it, and if they feel the need they can have VOIP disabled by default so that new players have to manually opt into it by switching it on, essentially passing the responsibility onto the player and keeping it off of Ubisoft.

Just last night I was in the DZ w/ three other friends and we ran into at least 8-10 other players and instead of going rogue and ruining everyone’s night we actually started talking, joking around, etc. until we’d see that someone went rogue and was killing players trying to extract in the distance and then we’d all go as a group and decimate the rogue. All of that only being possible because of VOIP. With VOIP disabled, we’d honestly probably have ended up fighting each other because we wouldn’t be able to discern the other groups intentions and one of us would get skittish.

I also am not a huge fan of them lowering the player count from 24 to 12 but given that they’re reducing the size of the DZ I can kinda understand that, but there’s no excuse for disabling VOIP altogether. That ruins a major part of the DZ.
