I’m struggling through the last half of Ch. 7 of Under Dust and Willow Trees (my Royalty AU) but I’ve been thinking a lot about the Buckley-Byers siblings dynamic in it so I thought I’d post some ‘headcanons’ (is it technically headcanons if it’s my own story?) about their childhood together that may never make it into the text but are still important to me nonetheless.

Robin was a toddler when her father married Joyce, so she doesn’t really remember a time without Jonathan as her older brother. Jonathan wasn’t much older than her, though he vaguely remembers life on his late father’s estate, but none of it was good so he associates Robin with his life getting better. He immediately decided he was going to be Robin’s protector, and he’d never tell her but he’s retained that mindset all throughout their childhood, and even into the present.

Jonathan was the first person Robin told about her sexuality. He didn’t want to take away her moment, so he waited a few weeks before he shared that he understood what it was like to be different and that he thought he may only like men.

They were mistaken for twins by visiting nobility a couple of times when they were young, especially when Robin went through a growth spurt and matched Jonathan’s height.

When Will was born, they both would drag blankets and pillows into his nursery and sleep by his crib, much to the irritation of his nursemaids.

Robin and Jonathan went through a phase where they couldn’t stand each other when they were pre-teens but it ended fairly fast and they ended up even closer to each other.

Will couldn’t grasp the fact that Robin and Jonathan weren’t his full siblings for the first decade of his life, and he didn’t understand why people thought it was so important to mention that Robin and Jonathan aren’t each others actual siblings. It made him very upset when he was younger, and he would protest by saying ‘They’re both my brother and sister, so they are brother and sister through me!’

The only time Jonathan has ever wished he was the heir to the throne instead of Robin was when he watched her agree to marry a man for the sake of their kingdom.

When Will went missing, Jonathan and Robin spent hours combing the forest looking for him, and every time they came back empty handed they would both break down. Because of this, Robin is the only one Jonathan ever lets see him cry.

Jonathan broke his leg after being bucked off a horse when he was a teenager and had to stay in his bedchambers for weeks. Robin and Will spent most of their free time with him, painting the stones of his bedchambers at his direction.

During UDAWT, Jonathan feels like he’s losing Will and Robin at the same time, and he feels completely helpless to stop it.

Will asks Robin about their father, King Richard, a lot because he died while Will was young, but he also asks her about her mother, the late Queen Melissa. Robin tries her best to answer his questions with what she knows. Will knows better than to ask Jonathan about his late father.

The mens’ clothing that Robin wears when she’s at the Willow is all stolen from Jonathan.

Will has done a series of portraits of both of his siblings. Each of them have one of their portraits hanging in their bedchambers. Robin nearly cried when she realized he painted her in men’s clothing.

Robin excels at horseback riding while Jonathan struggles with it. Jonathan excels at combat while Robin struggles with it. They both try to teach the other but it always ends with one or both of them getting injured. When Will gets healthier, he excels at both. He says it’s because his siblings are great teachers. In actuality, it was Sir Nancy’s teachings that helped him excel.

Before the events of UDAWT, Will finds out Robin’s a lesbian because he saw her kiss the alchemist’s apprentice. He shared his own secret and Robin couldn’t stop laughing because of course all three of the siblings ended up being gay.

Robin and Jonathan definitely set up a plan to intimidate the hell out of a certain young squire that captures Will’s heart…

The urge to write El into Under Dust and Willow Trees but to make her a baby so Steve and Robin can save and adopt her, then fabricate a story that she’s their daughter and therefore the heir to the throne… Nancy and Jonathan helping their partners to raise this baby, so it’s like she’s all of theirs…
