ok so i see a lot of people thinking that robin’s speech means that byler won’t happen and i just want to give a little analysis on why i think that the two can exist at once:

robin was struggling. robin was looking to a girl for her self worth, and because she couldn’t find acceptance there, she stopped accepting herself and therefore stopped trying in school and was overall completely depressed. then, robin realized that her self worth doesn’t depend on other people, it depends on herself. she should love herself, and love the fact that she’s a lesbian, and treat herself kindly. that was the point where she truly became “free”.

i don’t think that robin is encouraging will to give up on mike ever loving him back and live the rest of his life as a bachelor. robin didn’t do that, she’s very much in love with vickie. i think robin just saw that will, a closeted gay kid in love with his best friend who she does not know for a fact is also queer, was in a very similar place within his own relationship to himself and is encouraging him to accept his queerness and give himself some love. she’s telling him that at the end of the day, other people’s determination of your worth do not matter so long as you love and accept yourself, that’s when you’re really going to be happy.

she’s not saying “he’s never gonna love you back so move on”, she saying “you’re never gonna feel truly loved unless you love yourself”

and i think that’s a message that all of us, especially queer people, could stand to listen to

the Rowill bond is so incredibly important for BOTH WILL AND ROBIN;

she's technically the older and more experienced one but as far as we know, she's never known support and similitude in anyone other than her own girlfriend before this.

(her pained expression here as if she's expecting him to lash out/apologetic for disappointing him hits so, SO close to home)

she may have found acceptance in herself, but she's never been able to essentially fully relate to her peers or look for guidance in another queer person before this. and inexperienced as he may be, robin still asks will if she looked like she knew what she was doing-- because this is her first time experiencing these things too =)

sure, steve was always here for her, but the best he could do was accept, support and assure her that both she and vickie *like boobies* the same way he does (which.. we love you steve but being queer in the 80's is in no way comparable to the white, rich, straight, cis, man experience..)

and for what I can assume is the first time ever, she's had someone who's not just a listening ear, but also just understands what its like

because yes, robin buckley is a 19-year-old lesbian in the 80's who has been navigating life and sexuality all on her own this whole time; and being able to openly talk about her experiences and feelings the same way straight people are able to among their friends must feel like the most freeing thing in the world

this is why he's her favourite gay boy to drag around. not only because he's her homosexual disciple; but also because he's a safe space for her the same way she's a safe space for him!!
