Luci and Marti grew into children. The former was a social, friendly little girl, while the latter was confident and full of boundless energy. Tragedy struck, however, when Luci attempted to skate on November ice that had not yet fully frozen; it cracked, dragged her under, and left Martina as the last remaining triplet. Florian Sommerton became a teenager on a sharp March morning. He had never been a great fan of Parish Farm, small and crowded as it was, but the older he grew the more he despised it. He longed to go back home, to his real home, Sommerton Farm, where he had lived until he was nine. Soon after, Will Baxter grew up to become a sensitive, sickly infant. (He's still alive, though! That's what counts!)
In the New Year the eldest Smythe child, Catherina, turned 18. Her family surprised their lovely and hardworking sister with a puppy, whom they hoped would be a vermin-catcher and a companion in one. Catherina named him Nosewise.
Already she had received a marriage proposal, but with her father's support she turned the young man down. She wished for a little more time at home with her young siblings.
