still dk how i feel about akihiko and ugestu, but i love ugestu as a character.
Ugestu
Kenji Mizoguchi try to blur the barrier between reality and fiction. The film often make you doubt of what really happen on screen, and give it a sensation of mysterie and fantasy. The fact that the film is based on a ghost story help you to feel that way.
It’s a post WWII film, and it’s important because Mizoguchi whanted to do a movie about the consequences of war upon the family (even if it’s a war that take place in the azuchi-momayama period of japan, it’s clearly a critic of WWII and a desire to stand out of the propaganda film like The 47 Ronnin that he made)
The place of women in this film is HUGE, one time you see the usbands abandon her wifes (for success and glory) and the other time you see the rise of this woman, and how they whill take a place more important sometime thant anybody else in the film. All the moral aspect that the movie try to implement to his characters (or you) is teatching by the women and all the fall of the protagonist is due to her wifes. It’s a classic mizoguchi thematic because he is obstet by the place that women take in the society (and more specificaly here with the war), it’s clearly a critic about the woman condition in japan.
the visual of the film will really be stuck into your mind. I think more than his other film like Sister of Gion or The crucified Lovers (even if this film is really great and master a lot more thecomposition technic). You will see man in a boat floating in a dreamy-like lake, or japanesse traditionnal exocisation, it’s really cool. And love the transition between real world and the fictional one that take place in the middle of the film but not explicitely.
It’s a verrrry good movie, I love Ugestu and this is my favorite of Mizoguchi works. It’s a journey trough a dreamy-like atmosphere, love the ambiance, the morality, the characters, the long take shot or composition. It’s really great and definitely recomand it !

milah libin described John High's poetry as reminiscent of the 1953 black-and-white Japanese film Ugestu Monogatari, directed by Kenji Mizoguchi and based on stories in Ueda Akinari's book of the same name.
