#ugly phase

Yesterday, I was trying a 2nd sketch of commune Viktor, on the same page as my previous commune Viktor sketch. I went through that "ugly phase" that (I think) Scott Christian Sava warned about, where you think your art piece is just terrible, ugly, and hopeless, but that you just have to plough thru, past that, until your art starts to look good.

Hearing that, really helped me a few years ago, when I was painting a very complex card for my mom's birthday or Mother's Day. I thought I had ruined it. That it was hopeless. That it was so SO ugly. But I kept working on it anyway, and it eventually became a nice piece.

I distinctly felt the same "ugly phase" while working on yesterday's Viktor redraw. I was working on his nose, after his eyes, and I thought it was so ugly, that I must have done something wrong. But as I filled out the rest of the redraw, I realized that this is just how noses look, and also, Viktor's nose was an intrinsic, distinct feature of his.

Maybe I'm just not used to drawing noses. I never thought they looked nice. A couple years ago, I even stopped drawing them completely, even when I wasn't drawing chibi characters. I thought omitting the noses was a vast improvement for my drawings. But I'm beginning to see now, that if I want to draw Viktor, I'll have to draw noses again. Because it's a big part of what he looks like.
