“Lucio Fontana: On the Threshold” Retrospective @MetBreuer. A #MUSTsee SWIPE ⬅️ I have always been drawn to #Fontana’s work acquiring my first slashed ceramic work in the late 90s The first major survey of #LucioFontana (1899–1968) in the US in more than 40yrs, apart fr the major Venice/New York exhibition 2006 @guggenheim, this exhibition reexamines the career of one of the most iconic & innovative artists of the 20th century. The Argentine-Italian artist an essential precursor to the Arte Povera movement, is widely known for his audacious laceration of the flat single-color canvas of 1958, his slashed paintings known as the Cuts (Tagli) that became symbols of the postwar era. The exhibition presents extraordinary examples of this iconic body of work. Curated by Iria Candela, the exhibition explores the broad artistic odyssey of Lucio Fontana, presenting early foray into sculpture & ceramic, his spatial environments, Fontana's beginnings as a sculptor, as well as his pioneering environments, contextualizing the radical gesture of his Cuts as part of the artist's broader search to integrate the space of art and the space of the viewer. “Concetto Spaziale” / Concept of Space. “A dual citizen of Argentina & Italy, his work reflects a variegated sensibility that through the exhibition’s many highlights makes us aware of the radical essence of painting—literally slashing through the surface of history to open up a door to another time & spatial dimension,” said Sheena Wagstaff, Leonard A. Lauder Chairman of Modern & Contemporary Art. Though known primarily as a painter, Fontana was well into his career when, in 1949, he used a canvas for the first time. The exhibition presents examples of his first series of perforated paintings titled Holes (Buchi), as well as paintings loaded with heavy impasto or incrusted with Murano glass that preceded the Cuts (Tagli). The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with photographs by #UgoMulas. #italianart #metbreuer #themet #metluciofontana #art #arte #artcurator #artadvisor #artcollector (at The Met Breuer) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtBcW60Ftur/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=pt67yf3i308k
