Alexander Calder, BMW Art Car, 1975 - BMW 3.0 CSL,
The famous BMW art cars are complemented by a new realization of BMW Group Classic for the Calder Foundation, based on the BMW 3.0 CSL.
The history of the BMW art car collection dates back to 1975, when driver Hervé Poulain asked Alexander Calder to customize his BMW 3.0 CSL for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The American painter was proud of the result, but regretted not being able to own it, and unfortunately, he died before he could.
It is today that the Calder Foundation associated with BMW Group Classic in order to realize his dream, the same year in which the BMW 3.0 CSL celebrates the50 years anniversary.
This new Calder BMW Art Car is an identical replica to the model made for the 1975 24 Hours of Le Mans, and bears the same serial number (227592 / AP) as the original BMW 3.0 CSL, except for the suffix “AP” for “Artist’s Proof”.
Happy birthday, Alexander Calder!

Repost from @calderfoundation • Eero Saarinen commissioned a fountain from Calder in 1954 to be installed within a twenty-two acre artificial lake in front of the architect’s General Motors Technical Center building in Warren, Michigan. Calder’s idea for the project stemmed from an unrealized project for the 1939 World’s Fair in New York: an ephemeral “water ballet.” “The concept there was a large one,” remarked Calder of the General Motors project. “Jets of water. Lines of water can be monumental too. I took one hundred feet and had one jet at each end rising and falling at different speeds, and then that comes to a halt. There were seven smaller jets that were almost vertical; I called them the seven sisters because they were slender jets, and some rotated one way and some the other way and they made a rotating pattern against the sky. Then there is a bathtubful of water shot into the air to make a big boom when it hits. Then a bar rotating makes a fishtail—that’s rather fine.” Image: Drawing for Water Ballet, 1939; Water Ballet, 1956, General Motors Technical Center, Warren, Michigan. © 2021 Calder Foundation, New York / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York #Calder #AlexanderCalder #CalderFoundation #EeroSaarinen https://www.instagram.com/p/CUdggzUvwMU/?utm_medium=tumblr
