Casting Call: Romancing the Queen

a historical/medieval/fantasy-ish bachelorette-inspired story!

Attention all citizens of Anvia and beyond.  Queen Fallon of Anvia has recently announced her eligibility to be courted.  All citizens of Anvia or its neighbouring lands who hold a title* are eligible to apply for a chance to win Her Majesty’s heart.  If you are interested, please read on for details.

So, I was inspired by @teayo  and @mousysims and @foxsimthings to do a semi-bachelorette.  But I didn’t want to copy either of them directly.  So, I decided to flip the tables, and this was the result.  If you’re curious about the story, and/or want to submit a sim for Fallon, take a look under the cut!

Disclaimer: This won’t be exactly like a bachelorette.  It will be a bit more story based than gameplay-based.  At this point I’m not even sure how much if at all gameplay stuff such as attraction or relationships will have an effect!  So, yeah...  

Submission Guidelines: - Like I said above, every sim must have a title.  This was on the urging of Fallon’s advisors, in hopes of attracting only honorable and eligible nobility.  However, when writing the decree, they never specified what sort of title the sims must hold.  So, go wild.  However, you sim must have some kind of title. (ie, Duke, Countess, etc.)  But, like I said, the rules here are kind of loose. (Pirate Queen, anyone?) - Fallon is bisexual, so sims of all genders are to be accepted. - In this realm, magic is VERY rare, and there has not been a true Sorcerer(ess) in nearly a century.  Therefore, please don’t spam me with hundreds of magical sims.  I want mostly “normal” human sims.  However, if you want to discuss the potential of a minorly magical sim, feel free to send me an ask/dm!   - Sims must be young adults.  Fallon is 27, so try and keep your sims somewhat close in age to her.  (Within 3-ish years maybe?? Idk, I just don’t want like, an 18 year old or a 40 year old, I guess.) - You may use romantic traits, because this is more story based. - I have the more traits in CAS mod by thepancake1, so feel free to give your sim up to 5 traits. - Custom traits are allowed, just use your best judgement.  (Aka, no OP sims, please.) - I am maxis-mix so try and make your sims accordingly.  NO alpha hair.  If you only have alpha hair, I will replace your sim’s hair with something similar or fitting for them that I have in my collection.  Also, NO fullbody alpha skins.  Alpha-ish face details are okay (ex: lamatisse’s mercuria is okay), but no fullbody skins.  Also, if you use your own default eyes, I will just replace your sim’s eyecolor with the equivalent from my defaults, which is ratboysims’s impact eyes.  Also, I use lamatisse’s BARE skintones, the non-genetic version.  So try and limit custom skintones to being from that pack. - I will be accepting somewhere in the realm of 5-10 sims.  Please note that even if I get exactly 10 sims I might not accept them all, depending on what I get and what I need.  5 is the minimum, 10 is the maximum, that’s all I’m saying. - OH, one more thing!  In your submission post please tell me your sim’s name, title, give me a decent ammount of backstory (the more the better honestly), and also tell me where they live!  Your options are Anvia (Fallon’s kingdom), Oryn or Oraine (the neighboring kingdoms).  Relations with Oryn are rather sketchy right now, so keep that in mind.   - Not all the sims will necessarily live in the castle.  If sims are from Anvia, they might choose to live at their own place and stop by and visit to court Fallon, or host her at their own manor or dwelling.  So, if you want your sim to have their own living place, that’s fine! Idk exactly how this is going to work into the story, but just tell me in your submission post weather or not your sim would be living in the castle. - I realized I forgot a deadline.  So, we’ll put the tenative deadline as Jan 15th! (my b-day!)  Sorry, about that!

The Silver Book

...aka The Mystery Chapter. 

This is the third chapter that was published in 2013. I don’t know it it’s considered canon for The Color of Revenge or if Cornelia Funke scrapped it completely but it’s fascinating either way. 

Let’s discuss.

The Silver Book

In Le Puy, a small French town deep in the mountains of the Ardèche, there’s a museum that up until a few years ago held a treasure. These days the glass case is empty, except for a photograph of a book bound in silver. The clasps of the cover are shaped like swans in flight. The spine is decorated with towers entwined with roses, and the silver forms lilies and thorny vines on the covers. The observant visitor may spot a wolf’s muzzle or the head of a unicorn between the flowers.

The residents of Le Puy love their silver book. That’s why they keep the photograph; they still hope that one day a visitor will see the picture and say: “But I’ve just seen this book!”

I’m afraid they hope in vain. The thieves who stole the book in the night of the 11th November 2009 were acting on orders of the man (if we want to call him a man) for whom it had once been bound.

According to the description on the wall next to the glass case, the silver book came to Le Puy in 1823 – the legacy of a nobleman who died without heirs. But that’s just half the story. The book is much older than that.

The illustrations on the parchment pages show no religious stories like most books from its time. The kings and princes whose stories the silver book tells can’t be found in any historic text of the region. Because of that, the book had usually been assumed to be a fairy tale, made to entertain some nobleman’s children; or maybe the romanticized family history of some long forgotten prince.

The truth is, as it often tends to be, a lot stranger. For all these centuries, the book has done a good job keeping its secrets tucked between its pages. Even the thieves who stole it thought their employer wanted to obtain the silver cover. The insistent warnings they were given only confirmed that assumption: They weren’t to touch the book bare-handed or open the clasps which kept it closed under any circumstances.

Through the centuries there had been fourteen men and women who touched and opened the silver book. Afterwards, they all possessed a strange gift: They could bring written words to life using only their own voice. Characters, objects, all the worlds that hide within books as if they’re boxes made of letters… They came to life once they heard the voice of a person who had been touched by the silver book’s magic. And not only that: This magic was so strong that the gift it granted could be passed on, usually to the oldest child. The signs tend to start around the seventh birthday, though there are cases where it begins earlier.

Most of the fourteen known silvertongues kept their gift a secret. It is, after all, more than a little suspicious in a world that stopped believing in magic a long time ago.

The man who commissioned the silver book and had it stolen centuries later (yes, we better call him that, he doesn’t like having his secrets exposed at all) had the book bound for two reasons. Firstly, it keeps memories of another world on its pages – the world where he was from. But such a harmless purpose wasn’t enough. His kind loves to add a dash of mischief to all things. And thus he decided to hide something else in the silver book: a spell that makes all the life hidden within written words draw breath.

The men and women whose tongues were bewitched by the silver book didn’t even notice what happened. After all, they had simply touched a book.

No one knows why the original owner lost the silver book. Perhaps the first silvertongue was just a common thief.

Then there were the governess who surprised her protégés by reading a dragon out of her favorite book after she had found the silver book in her father’s library; the priest who secretly took it from a bishop’s shelf and read a devil out of one of his holy books a few days later; the servant who dusted it and never discovered the gift it had given him; the bookbinder who handled it while he was looking for mold and went on to read a trunkless elephant out of one of his favorite stories… His son Mortimer was said to have inherited the gift and used it with great success. He disappeared under mysterious circumstances, alongside his wife and daughter…

Oh yes, and then there’s the story of Ferdinando Lampedusa Fenoglio, the author who disappeared just like Mortimer Folchart had. He allegedly took a few of the stories the silver book told on its pages as inspiration for his own publication. A dangerous move, considering he was dealing with a magical book.

The museum guard who agreed to open Fenoglio the glass case (he was a big fan of his books) swore he never left him alone with the biggest treasure of the museum. He says that the author just stared at the silver cover for a while. He thinks it was because the silver was so blank, it looked like a mirror adorned with flowers. But surely that’s just a fanciful exaggeration.
