Community friends help newspaper keep going after fire

Rachel Maddow reports on a fire that consumed the headquarters of the New Rockford Transcript, a small town newspaper serving Eddy County in North Dakota since 1883, and emphasizes the importance of local newspapers to America's good health.

Glad to hear that the New Rockford Transcript was able to recover some of their archive!! Historic newspapers are an excellent resource for primary research, check out UIC’s guide to newspapers.

Dark Lies the Island by Kevin Barry

For Barry’s characters, language is a struggle and a hobby and an art. In the book’s best story, a blocked poet buys a hotel in stormy Killary where he pulls pints and eavesdrops, hoping to pick up some local color. “My first weeks out at the Water’s Edge I had kept a surreptitious notebook under the bar. The likes of ‘thrun down’ would get a delighted entry. I would guess at the likely etymol­‑ogy — from ‘thrown down,’ as in ‘laid low’? But I had quickly had my fill of these maudlin bastards.” A few hours later, the ocean breaches the sea wall and the poet hands out free drinks as the inn floods and waters rise.
