this is so predictable that it’s making my head ache that a popular kpop idol for americans is being used to promote an anti-nkorea & red scare/anti-leftism propaganda show made by disney.........  truly textbook on how US cultural imperialism works & how skorean politics is inextricably tied to US conservative neocolonial agendas....

i loved this part in parasite but it was just ?? seeing ppl call this like cute & completely miss the part that her needing to be from chicago & knowing fluent english & having an american education are absolutely key indicators for her class status & thus quality & trustworthiness as a teacher. knowing fluent english is extremely important for class mobility in ways that white westerners truly have no idea.... being associated w america is not like coincidental, part of parasite’s message is how wealth & prestige is intrinsically tied to america in s korea which can not be separated from s korea being a neocolony for the US.... bong joon ho is more explicit abt US imperialism in his other movies, in particular “the host,” but bjh is just as critical of imperialism & colonialism & whiteness as he is of capitalism & you cannot fully understand parasite without understanding those other aspects as well.

also the more i get into like my own culture’s traditional practices of healing + living w disability, the more evident how colonialism/racism is pervasive within mainstream recovery + disability conceptions....... the mind/body dichotomy where the body is supposed to be precisely controlled & thus ‘conquered’ which is rly a form of dissociation.... colonization/racism being partly justified through scientific colonialism & supposedly racialized peoples are ‘barbaric’ & ‘irrational’ bc we’re mired in our physicality which is thus rife w deviant sexuality & effusive emotionality....... & white ppl are juxtaposed as ‘superior’ bc they’re ~intellectually-based~ & can separate their minds from their bodies..... when all that is fake & the mindbody cannot be separated from each other... & also seeing how recently white self-care culture/psychiatry has ‘uncovered’’ that the mind is more connected to the body than is traditionally (for them) thought & acting like that’s such a HUUUUGE discovery & creating various therapies which incorporate them together when this is all nothing new to like. rly so many cultures.... 👁👁

i’m not v knowledgeable abt how personality disorders specifically are seen in korea or much abt how the general reaction has been to sunmi being open abt being diagnosed w BPD-- but my impression is that it’s been chill & supportive... or at least not any real backlash. that’s such a stark contrast to how celebs in the west (esp women) would be treated if they were open abt having BPD, it’s one of the most highly stigmatized mental illness diagnosis & general public & fans alike are usually merciless to those w BPD or at least have a much marked & lowered opinion toward them after hearing abt it.... & yet sunmi is out here thriving & being loved... i love that for her... 💖

mental health stigma in korea is Complicated, like it is everywhere else, & cannot be reduced to the usual western tropes of “abhorrently backward & prejudiced koreans are uniformly terrible abt mental illness”
