It’s not everyday that I wake up to find out from @jasonkwanmusic that I’m on a billboard in Central London for @ukblackpride - HAPPY 15TH BIRTHDAY YOU BRILL HUMANS 🎂 TLDR: You never know until you ask ❤️ Backstory: I start my Europe tour last year and having seen Jason Kwan on my socials, make a note to reach out while I’m in London. My first show is with the @bittenpeachuk, I walk out and low and behold, THERE THEY ARE. After the show, I say hi and we arrange for coffee. We have coffee and I ask Jason when their next gigs are. I was floored when they said #UKBlackPride - I hadn’t even enquired with #UKBP about performing as I’d assumed they wouldn’t consider an Asian performer. I then have a bad experience with someone in the music industry which upset me a great deal. I get myself on the phone with @dove.tales to get myself out of the dumps. In that convo, I’m reminded that my commitment as a musician is to inspire others to live the lives of their dreams and that it won’t always be rainbows and unicorns 🦄 I then think how contacting UK Black Pride would be consistent with that commitment. I send an email saying that albeit last minute (in 2 weeks time) should ANYTHING open up, I’d be ready to perform. Fast forward a week, I’m on my way back from a show in Austria and I get a phone call from UKBP saying that a slot had opened up and if I could perform. It was seven days out BUT I WAS SO READY. In my stand for queer Asians being visible, I ask Jason if they want to duet with me to which they said they wouldn’t have time. 48 hours later, I get a message saying ‘I’m drunk, let’s do it’. We rehearse S&M and that Sunday I’m on stage in front of some 5000 people doing what I love most. A year later in a crazy full circle moment, a photo of us right after our performance is on a #billboard in Central London 🙀 There were so many opportunities for me to keep my mouth shut. And I didn’t. One of the biggest things that I have learnt from this tour is just how important it is that minority groups are visible. I had the pristine opportunity to duet with @jasonkwanmusic at @ukblackpride and it was such an incredible moment to have myself and Jason break the stereotypes that queer Asians often get boxed into. We got to be PROUD. We got to be SEXY. And most importantly, we got to be SEEN 👀 This was for all the Asians in the world who feel like you can’t make your mark, the time has come and I am behind you 300% ❤️ Ps.
