TIXTLA, Guerrero — Bouts of violence at voting stations in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero are threatening to smear what was otherwise a peaceful and uneventful midterm election throughout much of the country.
"Protests started peacefully on Sunday, after brief roadblocks on Saturday. A local march was guarded by the communitarian police organization known as CRAC. But violence erupted later in the day amid allegations that the election had been annulled in the town of Tixtla following clashes between normalista students and police after ballot boxes and electoral facilities were torched. Citizens also joined the melee against protesters to defended their right to vote. The communitarian policemen did not participate in the violence nor attempted to stop it.Mexico’s electoral authority (INE) said elections were not suspended in Tixtla and stressed that voting was conducted peacefully at more than 90 percent of voting polls across the country. Oaxaca state governor Gabino Cué told Milenio Noticias that the “scandalous” images of violence making the rounds in the press are not representative of what’s really happening in the south of Mexico. He claimed less than 1 percent of voting booths in his state where the subject to violence." Click link to read more.
"Oaxaca, Oaxaca - Teachers of Section 22 of the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers clashed with federal police and the Mexican Army for control of six electoral commission offices located in municipal seats. Of the 11 headquarters they occupied in recent days, authorities have recovered eight, while the teachers control three. One of the clashes occurred in Huajuapan de Leon, in the Mixteca [indigenous] region [in northwest Oaxaca], where they used rocks, sticks and tear gas. In the brawl, federal forces arrested four people who supported the teachers and the teachers took as many policemen hostage. After more than 10 hours, all the arrested were released and the teachers retained control of the offices of the National Electoral Institute (INE). There were more than 30 people injured on both sides. ... In the city of Tlaxiaco, also in the Mixtec region, teachers maintained control of District Board number six. When federal police arrived, they were surrounded by about 2,000 teachers. According to a witness, an official from INE asked the soldiers to retreat because the office had not requested their presence. In Teotitlán de Flores Magon, in the Cañada [Valley] region [northcentral], the union barricaded the road to prevent the arrival of elements of the Gendarmerie, who withdraw pending further orders. In Tuxtepec district in the Papaloapam Basin [northeast], teachers set fire to the premises of District Board number one and to two vehicles, but federal forces took control of the offices of the INE. In the Central Valley region, where the capital of the state is located, federal police and gendarmerie arrived at the Petroleos Mexicanos [PEMEX] distribution terminal located in Santa Maria El Tule, from which fuel distribution was started to 50 stations inf the city of Oaxaca and neighboring municipalities; each of these establishments was sent a tank truck with 20,000 liters, but for the situation to return to normal will require a week, officials of the company said. In the Sierra Sur [Southern Mountains], in Miahuatlán de Porfirio Diaz, military forces arrived, but teachers barricaded themselves to prevent their eviction from the District Board 10. Burning of the office was reported and the teachers seized an employee of the INE who was handed over to the Red Cross paramedics and observers of the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Peoples of Oaxaca. At night, the teachers retreated to the town hall and the military took control of the local electoral office. In Pinotepa Nacional [in the Jamiltepec District in the west of the Costa Region] teachers burned furniture in the District Board 11 office, and upon the arrival of the Mexican Army, withdrew, so the offices were handed over to officials of the INE. On Friday night, a group of people armed with machetes and sticks, tried to evict about 400 teachers who had taken the gas station in the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla [in the Pochutla District in the east of the Costa Region], arguing that they wanted to buy fuel. The attackers, identified by the teachers as supporters of Oscar Valencia, a PRI candidate for federal deputy, beat and injured six teachers."

"Today, Sunday 7 June 2015 Mexicans go to the polls to renew the Chamber of Deputies and, in some states, they will also elect governors and members of local congresses. Electoral processes in Mexico have often been tarnished by corruption and even violence – cases in point are the 1988 and 2006 presidential elections, where the victories of Carlos Salinas (PRI) and Felipe Calderón (PAN) respectively were highly contested. But today’s elections come at a particularly difficult moment for the country: a seemingly endless wave of violence involving police forces and the military, accompanied by high rates of voter disaffection and a widespread lack of trust in institutions and politicians. The latter is partly due to broken promises by the current and previous administrations and a series of scandals involving pretty much all parties during the campaign season. But it is also very likely a reaction to the appalling way in which the General Attorney has handled the case of the 43 disappeared students of Ayotzinapa and repressed the movement calling for justice for their families. Over the last few days civilians who have been victims of politically-related violent attacks have made it clear that they have been targeted by government officials. Those of us watching from many parts of the world are worried that dissidents and pretty much anyone who voices their opposition to the ruling party – the PRI – are at risk. The army, the federal police and the national gendarmerie have been deployed to the South-Eastern states of Mexico and to the state of Guerrero – all of these with a violent electoral past –, allegedly to keep things calm and under control. But we are worried that their presence will lead to human rights violations and an escalated violence. We want everyone to know that the world is watching. On this website we have been and will continue posting news updates on today’s electoral process. Please help us keep a watchful eye and join in on raising our voices for justice." Family members and supporters of the 43 disappeared Ayotzinapa students made their final stop of a European tour in London Monday night. “Among the objectives of the caravan is to highlight the responsibility of European governments in the grave human rights violations committed against the 43 students,” states the Tlachinollan Human Rights Center in Guerrero, which provides vital support to victims’ families in the ongoing search for their loved ones. “They have signed cooperation agreements with Mexico on security and trade, which has involved the sale of arms and providing training to the police and Mexican military, although Mexico continues violating human rights.”
