Malchus and Ullawren honestly kind of break my heart

Malchus was a widower. He lost his wife several years prior to meeting the young queen, and they were far more compatible than they expected. While Malchus resided in Ulla’s palace, they gave in to their emotions, despite Ullawren being engaged, but not in love with her fiance. So when she contacts Malchus to tell him she’s announced her pregnancy and the dissolving of her engagement, he is more than supportive, and they welcome their son together, despite their kingdoms being on opposite sides of the world. Malchus stays in contact with Ullawren, always carrying a fondness for her, and he adores his son; even though it’s through Malchus that Rinwey adopts his stance against Shapeshifters.

When Malchus goes to either pick up or drop off Rinwey, he always makes sure to spare time for Ullawren.

So years later, when Malchus is murdered in Hell with his son witnessing the act, it tears the boy’s heart out, and when Ullawren learns about his demise, she spirals into a years-long depression, having lost her dear friend.

King Malchus of Velnuss, one of the six royals whose kingdom borders the Gates to Hell, keeping the Shifters sealed away from the rest of the world.

Queen Ullawren of Gelleshire, the woman in charge of one of the most technologically advanced kingdoms since the Rise of Humanity.

After a slew of visits to Gelleshire to bring home new technology to keep the Gates sealed, Malchus and Ullawren had grown close. The two had a short-lived intimate relationship, but with lasting effects as Ullawren became pregnant with Malchus’ child. After forfeiting her betrothal to another king following the announcement, Ullawren still led her kingdom with dignity and grace, and delivered a prince she named Rinwey. Malchus remained present in the boy’s life, making the long treks halfway across the world to see his son, and to bring him to Velnuss, which would one day be his half sister’s kingdom. But Rinwey’s life would be turned upside down when his father, during a routine trip into Hell, is stabbed and killed by a Shifter; plummeting his mother into depression, and Rinwey into years of anger and repressed mourning.
