anon request for another fuuko-bill piece!!
UU Week 2024, Day 5: Favorite Arc
This one was hard.
Ragnarok has good moments, but it removes Fuuko for a really long time.
Unmove has some of my favorite slice-of-life, but like with everything in 101, it feels a bit too fast to be my favorite.
In the end, I came back to Old Reliable- Summer.
Summer arc is probably the most self-contained arc in the series. There's only a few big changes to the roster (Untruth getting moved to Mui, Feng being removed from the board), and it's not dependent on the rest of the series like, say, Spring.
Instead, Summer is about two things. Some of the best fights in the series, and the best mini-cast.
Undead Unluck has a few 'mini-casts'- Team Buroja, Team France, and Team China.
We don't really get to see much of Buroja interacting, and everyone on Team France is on the same side, but China is a bunch of screwed-up people colliding with each other like forks in a garbage disposal and I love it.
Shen was the 'third wheel' for the first two arcs before bowing out in Unrepair and Autumn, but Summer brings him and Mui back into the forefront in a big way. It's his flashback, his mentor, his worldview- and eventually, his death.
Now, back to the best fights in the series. There's two fights this arc, and they're both a 1vEveryone. Feng vs Andy, Shen, Fuuko, and Mui, and Summer vs the above + Top, Chikara, and Tatiana.
The only other real instance of an extended 1vE is Ragnarok, and Sun's just not the same as Feng.
Feng's almost manic energy throughout the fight makes him an utter delight. He figures out how to counter Andy after Autumn, assuring the audience that the Book Boost did not suddenly make Andy more powerful than everyone else- it just expanded his kit.
As the fight continues, we get the biggest death in UU- and Shen's subsequent revival.
I have so much to say about Feng, but let's move on to Summer itself. After Feng is dealt with, we have to take out the big firework dragon- and that's when Top, Tati, and Chikara come in.
Most other UMA are a smaller effort. Even Spring and Sick eventually came down to one-on-one.
Summer is an example of a bunch of people coming together to take down a big boss, and it works.
The eventual destruction of Summer serves double duty- for one, it shows just how well some abilities can stack together, and two, it shows the flaws in Feng's philosophy.
Feng would not have been able to beat Summer. There is literally not a single thing he could've done to beat Phase 2- because he doesn't have the necessary skills.
But then again, Tatiana doesn't have the necessary skills to solo summer either. Nor does Andy or Shen.
But when you combine everyone's abilities, Summer becomes a complete joke. He gets bent around like a pool noodle, frozen before using a single attack, and killed by a blast that, last we saw, didn't even take out Creed or Feng. Feng's philosophy of individual might would have hit a big fat wall even if he did somehow win against everyone.
Summer has something to say, and it says it. It says it in the language of dislocated elbows, and fireworks, and free-falling makeouts, and it says it loud.
uma summer is not over yet
UMA summer
