WEEK 67: UMDHLEBI

It's that time of week again... you got it, it's Crypt-A-Long Time! The Crypt-A-Long is inspired by the annual Geek-A-Long blanket by Lattes and Llamas, and features cryptids, folkloric beasts, and aliens from all corners of the globe. My charts are designed to work with the standard Geek-A-Long pattern, so pop over to the website for more info on knitting and assembly.

The world is full of stories of man-eating plants, but the Umdhlebi of South Africa stands apart by being worryingly plausible. Rather than being something like a giant venus flytrap, it's supposed to be a tree so toxic that anything coming near it drops dead. The corpses then rot, fertilizing the soil and nourishing the tree. That sounds distressingly like something evolution could actually produce. The fruit of the umdhlebi supposedly hangs from very long stems, but I just couldn't make that read right in low-resolution knitting.

Umdhlebi is a mysterious species of plant purported to originate in what was once Zululand in Southern Africa. First mentioned in 1870, little has been reported about the tree's appearance, but it is said to grow from a small shrub to a large tree with two layers of bark. Both forms have brittle, glossy leaves and red and black fruit.

The umdhlebi is said to be incredibly toxic, poisoning any living thing that approaches. It has been speculated that this is a means to fertilise the soil around where it grows, and the ground around the tree is often littered with skeletons. It has also been reported that the umdhlebi has a minimal capacity for movement.

Betrayal, deception, getting away with something, acting strategically

The unsuspecting can be masked with bark, yet behind it waits with theft, betrayal, deception, and trickery. When someone is devious they often use underhanded tactics to achieve goals and come out unscathed. Prioritizing what's important with strategy, will let you focus on achieving your goals. Be selective and know you can’t do everything at once. Cunning or deception can be used to gain an advantage over someone or something else. You may have stumbled upon some devious fruit in your life, which oftentimes is not what you expected. Although the longer the deviousness stays in your life, the more toxic the environment becomes.

The living tree of South Africa also known as the Umdhlebi.  The cryptid has two layers of  bark, a dead outer layer  and a new layer that is always growing. Fruit hangs on small poles  from this devious creature that is red and black. Using its cunning  to draw small animals in and then poison them leaving skeletons littered around. As the animals decay the soil around is fertilized to keep the cryptid strong and growing.
