The millennials are distinctive as the first generation since the advent of the automobile less likely to own a car since their parents. The University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute has confirmed this trend in a recent study showing that applications for drivers licenses have declined considerably in recent years. I was initially surprised that only 17% of those surveyed said that they were foregoing their driving privileges because they preferred public transportation, but I am not sure all the hipsters packed into the L train from Brooklyn every morning are enjoying their experience. Young people are embracing an urban lifestyle where owning a car is just not practical. While fewer people apply for drivers licenses, others who do are opting for car share programs like zipcar rather than owning their own cars. For those of us who hope that city planners will begin to move away from an automobile-centric mindset, a decline in people eligible to drive is only good news.
