Following up on the MCNY post about trolley dodgers is this uncredited image from somewhere on facebook. It shows an apparent mid-1950s scene with Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and an NYCTA trolley bus. The Dodgers left Brooklyn in time for the 1958 baseball season. Trolley bus service persisted in NYC, notably Brooklyn, until 1960. A nice informative history of trolley buses can be found here: http://trolleybuses.org/history/

The current governors of New York and New Jersey simply do not appreciate the vital role commuter railroads play in the regional economy. What is most stunning is how quickly NJ Transit has declined to the point that people are taking their lives into their hands using the service.

I have ridden in Toronto’s articulating open gangway subway cars and I wondered why we didn’t use a similar design in New York. It’s progress, but it will take at least 4 years to build the cars and will only increase capacity by 8 - 10 %.

An inscription on a sidewalk in Battery Park City reads, “A hundred times I have thought: New York is a catastrophe, and fifty times: New York is a beautiful catastrophe.” The inscription functions like a caption under a painting or at the foot of a monument: upon reading it, you are forced to look up at the work of art in front of your eyes, and then back again at the text, comparing the words to the object. Except in this case, the work is not in front of you but all around you. You are standing inside it and have been moving through it. You have probably been waking up, renting apartments, reading books, and having children in it. You are part of the catastrophe.
