HEEEY HARD SPOILERS FOR SPIRIT AND SONG.
Fun FanFiction Fact: This highly emotional fanfiction presents a lot of realistic mixed emotions also “The hardest song to play is sometimes your own” as a concept, which is true. Sometimes it is. For Grimmjow, even though he was numbing himself it still was. I couldn’t leave out a musical element!
Before writing a song for this myself, there were two songs I actually considered using instead of my (Grimmjow’s) “Spirit and Song” and those were:
Uncle Lucius - “Keep the Wolves Away”
"Where the working man does his best to provide,
safety and shelter for kids and a wife.
Given little love n soul every day,
making over time to keep the wolves away.”
Brother Dege - “Too Old to Die Young”
“Too old to die young now...
Above or below the ground...
Yes, too old to die young now!
Still the good lord might lay me down.”
The reason I didn’t make use of or reference to these songs was because while they certainly suited Grimmjow in this fanfic, they didn’t fit his situation lyrically - I wanted an uplifting ballad for him. They’re both in the vicinity of the correct mood: “Keep the Wolves Away” was the correct mood but the ballad/story in it is different and “Too Old to Die Young” almost made it but it wasn’t quite uplifting enough and too vague.
As I do, references are usually to enhance (not create) the framework of what I’ve built in fanfic; according to some people, I can’t do things my way enough. lol So instead of referencing these songs I’m familiar enough with southern folk and wrote Grimmjow his own kind of ballad:
“Spirit and Song” lyrics (sort of a spoiler)
Tailored to fit perfectly. If you know Grimmjow’s character from Spirit and Song you know why. I’m not going to spoil that much. You’ll just have to read it.
(I do not own or profit from mention of these videos and music.)
