About the Undergoop AU

Since some of our Undergoop characters will be attending The Island RP event, I thought it would be good to have a quick run-down of the basics of this AU to show to others in case they ask.

For those unfamiliar with Undergoop, brace yourselves. This is a strange one. It's pretty messed up. You've been warned.

Undergoop is an AU that is still developing. It started as a joke by @drunk-chara @fumeirabbit @renegadeforlemonade @lazorsftw and myself ( @secrettalemod ). We were later joined in this madness by @askpinksin and @dotsuffer, and together, the seven of us have been working together to develop this former joke into a legit AU. It is still in-progress, and we haven't decided how everything works just yet, but here is a (very brief) summary of the things that may be important for the RP event. - General -

In Undergoop, all of the monsters' (including NPCs) are made of goop. But not normal goop. An insane wizard (whose identity is still unconfirmed at the moment) used his magic to melt a whole lot of children into a living, goopy substance. Yes, living-- the children were not killed, just transformed into an amorphous goop-- and then used to create new life: monsters. Gross, goopy monsters.

The monsters are not aware that their goopy bodies are made of magically-melted children. Not all of them, anyway; Sans is aware of the children, as he can hear their voices.

In addition to Sans, Chara and Frisk can also hear the goop kids. (For roleplay purposes, it is up to you if your character can also hear their voices or not)

In this AU, monsters do not turn to dust when they die. They turn to liquid.

Food in this AU is also made of goop-- normal goop, not child-goop. Except maybe Nice Cream. I wouldn’t recommend trying the Nice Cream.

Since the monsters are made of goop, it is difficult/straining to hold their shape for very long. So they occasionally need to rest by reverting to shapeless blobs/puddles of goop.

Monster magic, like the wizard's magic, can melt humans (and other things) into goop. The monsters are then able to absorb the humans, who become a part of the collective mind of the other children that make up that monsters' body. However, they leave the souls un-melted and do not absorb them, as they are under orders to bring the un-melted souls to King Asgore.

In this AU, only solid beings are able to cross the barrier. If a goop monster absorbs a non-melted human soul, they will become solid. Seven human souls will provide enough power to shatter the barrier entirely.

- Frisk -

Frisk is a normal human, not goop.

In this AU, Frisk is morally conflicted. Frisk wants to save the children and make them whole again, but knows that doing so would mean having to kill the monsters. On the other hand, letting the monsters live means that the children will remain miserable.

- Chara -

Chara was originally one of the kids captured by the wizard, but escaped before being melted. They tried to save the kids by getting help from the townspeople, but the townspeople did not believe Chara's story, so “nobody came” to help. Chara never forgave the townspeople for this. It only made matters worse that, after the goop monsters were discovered, the townspeople imprisoned them underground despite Chara trying to explain that the monsters (and the children they were made of) were innocent.

Chara killed the wizard in revenge for what he had done.

Chara went to live Underground with the goop monsters, and was accepted as family.

After Asriel absorbed Chara and died (turning into liquid, not dust), Chara lived on as a mist-like entity.

- Sans -

Sans can hear the voices of the kids, and knows that they are miserable. So he tries to live his shared existence with them in the best way possible, doing everything he can to keep them comfortable and happy. For example, he learned to play the trombone because one of the kids that now shares his body missed being able to play music. He also spends a lot of his time resting in a puddle-like state because that state is less unpleasant for the kids. Papyrus and the other monsters all just assume he's lazy.

In this AU, Sans' condiment of choice is not ketchup, but soy sauce.

- Goop Children -

The melted kids have a sort of shared consciousness, and can hear and communicate with each other.

Frisk, Chara, and Sans are the only other people who can hear the children. No one else is even aware of the kids, or has any idea what the goop is made of.

- Flowey -

In Undergoop, Flowey is Goopy the Goop Flower. After Asriel died and turned to liquid, that liquid was absorbed by the flowers he died upon. Later, one of those flowers was taken and melted with monster magic so they could try to find a way to re-solidify it. After all, if they could find a way to make goop solid again, they could cross the barrier. The experiments reawakened Asriel’s essence/being, thus giving us Goopy. Since Goopy was melted with monster magic, he is just “normal” goop, not formed out of goop children.

- Jerry -

Jerry is the only monster that is solid. He is solid because he absorbed a pink human soul (confidence) belonging to a human that fell before Frisk. This soul would have been the last soul needed to shatter the barrier if Jerry hadn’t messed everything up by absorbing it. Jerry has no interest in crossing/breaking the barrier; he only stole the soul so he could be solid. The other monsters hate him for doing what he did and getting in the way of their freedom. Now all Jerry does is brag about being solid and complain about all the gross goop everywhere. Jerry is a jerk.

Poor Frisk (I seem to be saying that a lot for this AU).

Poor Sans, too, since he would have pretty much the same problem. And for a lot longer than Frisk has. xD

I have another headcanon I’d like to run by you guys.

In the original timeline, Papyrus is always trying to get Sans to stop being lazy and work harder, right? And I’m sure it would be the same in Undergoop. But what if Sans is also trying to convince Papyrus to slow down a little and take a breaks once in a while?

I mean, if the goop monsters have to rest occasionally because it’s difficult/straining to keep their shape 24/7, then resting would be kind of important. Plus, Sans can hear the kids’ voices, and he knows they feel better when the monsters are in a restful, puddle-like state.

Papyrus would be the type to work really hard and rest as little as possible. He wouldn’t want to just sit around as a shapeless lump of goop when there is still work to be done. So he’d be putting a lot of unnecessary strain on the poor kids he shares his body with, without even knowing it.

But Sans would know.

“Papyrus... you really should take a break. I think you’ve been working too hard.”

“NONSENSE!”

“No, really. You’re tired; I can tell. I can, uh, practically hear your body crying out for a rest. Please, Paps. Take a break. You have to take care of yourself. ...All of yourself.”

“ALL OF MYSELF...?”

“Look, I’m just... worried about you. Promise me you’ll take at least one break today?”

“FINE, SANS. IF IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER, I WILL TAKE ONE SHORT BREAK TODAY.”

“Thanks, bro. Really. ...It’ll do a lot more than make me feel better.”

I know some other ideas have been tossed around in the chat now, but I was thinking again about the original idea of an insane wizard having melted the children, and uh... I kinda want to suggest a possible plot?

Again, none of this is necessarily canon or anything, just me getting carried away and suggesting ideas. And I’m sticking it under a read-more because I have a feeling this is going to get kinda long.

Maybe Chara was one of the kids the wizard kidnapped, but managed to escape before being melted. Chara tried to get help; tried to tell the townspeople about the mad wizard that was going to melt the kids, but no one believed what Chara was telling them ("but nobody came"). It is possible that no one even noticed that children were missing, because the wizard could have been very careful to only choose kids no one would miss (maybe he only used orphans, or even kids from other towns, I dunno). Since no one believed Chara, Chara was unable to save the kids in time.

The kids were then melted by the wizard and used to create the goop monsters. After seeing the monsters, the townspeople found them repulsive and terrifying, and wanted to destroy them. They couldn't manage to do much to the goop monsters, though, because their weapons just kinda harmlessly passed through the goop. That's why they decided to seal them underground instead, with a barrier that only solid beings can cross (and they somehow managed to overcome and seal away the monsters in an incredibly short amount of time ;P). Chara tried to stop the townspeople; tried to explain that all these monsters were once just innocent kids (if Frisk can hear the voices, I assume that means Chara can hear them too?).

Chara was angry at the people, who didn't even bother trying to help the kids when they were caught by the wizard. Then, to make matters worse, the people trapped them underground forever. Chara would never forgive the wizard or the townspeople for what happened.

Full of rage, Chara attacked and killed the wizard, then fled to Mount Ebott (Ebgoop?). Chara fell into the Underground, and was accepted by the goop monsters as family.

Chara wanted to free the monsters, so convinced Asriel to absorb their soul so he could become solid and cross the barrier. Once on the surface, Chara had hoped that Asriel would collect more human souls, enough to shatter the barrier forever. But Asriel was attacked, and retreated back underground, where he died and turned into liquid (instead of dust?) on top of a bed of flowers. Some of these flowers/seeds were replanted near the place where Chara first fell.

King Asgore subsequently declared that any humans who fall down to the Underground must be turned to goop and absorbed, so they are forced to share the same fate as the children that the humans didn’t even try to save. The humans’ souls, however, would be taken to Asgore, who intends to shatter the barrier when he finally collects enough of them.

Since Chara's plan failed, Gaster and/or Alphys started experimenting on ways to make goop monsters solid. If they can find a way to make goopy beings solid, then they can cross the barrier. They did experiments on monsters, but couldn't find a way to make them solid enough for the barrier. A flower was also used in experiments, in which the flower was melted with monster magic so they could try to find a way to re-solidify it with artificial human souls/determination/something, thus Flowey.

Years later, Frisk falls into the Underground and either finds a way to free all the goop monsters and help them come to be at peace with their existence (pacifist), gets partially/entirely melted by monster magic (and possibly absorbed?) and thus remains Underground with the goop monsters forever (neutral), or kills them all because Frisk thinks putting them out of their misery is the best way to help them (vigilante/genocide).

Like in the game, Frisk somehow reawakens Chara. I see Chara depicted as a ghost a lot, but for this AU, what if Chara is reawakened as mist, as a result of turning to liquid with Asriel when they died? And if the vigilante route is taken, then Chara, through sheer determination to stop Frisk from killing their friends, manages to become at least semi-solid/goopy, which is why Chara would appear partially melted at the end of the game. Too late to save their friends, Chara attacks/kills (absorbs?) Frisk/player as revenge for killing the children/monsters Chara had tried so hard to save.

There was so much madness happening in that chat, even before the Undergoop discussion started. And at some point during it all, it was decided that I was a Temmie.

I wish I had remembered to save some of the stuff that went on before Undergoop, because a lot of that was just as crazy. xD
