Digital diplomacy: UN’s Department of Political Affairs in 140-character bursts
The Department of Political Affairs’ presence on social media is relatively new but clearly growing. DPA joined Twitter, the platform that now counts the vast majority of the UN’s 193 Member States as participants, in 2012. The Department, along with the ever greater number of government officials active on Twitter, are all staking a distinct claim in the burgeoning digital diplomacy universe.
As the DPA Twitter account nears 100,000 followers, Politically Speaking looks at how some in the UN use this powerful platform.

The Department of Political Affairs illustrates how UN mediators and political and peacebuilding missions in areas of tension around the world are working in complex environments to prevent conflict and bolster peace in the latest issue of its bi-annual bulletin, Politically Speaking. Headlining this issue are the efforts made toward peace earlier this year in Africa's Great Lakes region.
This issue is downloadable for free in English from UNDPA's website.

Mali Presidential Elections First Round 28/07/2013
Since March 2012, Mali has undergone one of the most serious security and political crises in its history, marked by the occupation of three of its main regions (Kidal, Timbuktu and Gao) and a coup d'état. The presidential election of 28 July will enable Mali to start the reconciliation and reconstruction process. A total of 27 candidates, including one woman, are running for the presidency.
UNHCR urges and has facilitated the participation of Malian refugees in Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Niger.
UN Women supports a women's oversight platform for fair and violence-free elections in Mali, inspired by similar women’s electoral “situation rooms” in Senegal and Sierra Leone.
