I'm still processing my feelings on the Good Omens finale.
For anyone who would like an ending with no expiration date, I'd like to recommend an old fic of mine.
Set as the first apocalypse is nearly upon them, when Heaven realizes they're missing a very important archangle who is fated to signal the start of the end times. When Crowley is less than willing to be returned to his former angelic glory to fill the role, the archangels take his memories of the fall and everything after.
Needless to say, it doesn't go well. Fortunately for everyone involved, the newly restored archangel seems to tolerate the presence of one specific principality. Which is how Aziraphale is put in charge of ensuring the reinstated Raphael is ready to do his duty when the time comes.
I wanted to force Aziraphale to approach the threat of an apacolypse with the fear that he might have already lost the most important relationship in his life and how that might impact the choices he makes.
And I wanted Crowley to wrestle with what it might mean if he was finally Aziraphale's first choice, but he had become an angel for it to happen.
Then, I needed them to talk through those issues and use their words to finally get on the same page for once.
I also wanted an ending where they had a chance to be an us for even longer than they were forced to go along with their respective sides as far as they could. And I wanted them to be able to rest in their happiness without fear of above or below rising up against them.
It's the type of ending I dearly wish, with all of my aching heart, that we had gotten.
