Back to Basics: Week One (9/9/19-15/9/19)
I decided to start a new series of posts on here which will help me to reflect upon my own work and ideas going forward as well as perhaps provide some insight for others starting their magical journey into Thelemic/Golden Dawn style ritual magic as well as how they can eventually incorporate other systems into their practice.
What I’ve been doing this week.
I have been experimenting with another system for the past twelve months and had pretty much abandoned my original system. The reason for this was to see how magic works in another framework. Doing this has allowed me to dispel some of the nonsense the Golden Dawn system espouses and has also showed me more of what really matters within magic and how different systems could be enhanced by taking from each other.
So in my first week of going back to the basics, I stuck to an extremely simple regimen. I performed the Lesser banishing ritual of the Pentagram in the morning and the evening. Ideally I would do this at sunrise and sunset, however, due to my work schedule, it has become more along the lines of upon waking up and upon going to sleep.
I also practice Liber Resh four times a day, again, due to my work schedule the timing is not always ideal. I always get the time to do noon and sunset, and either dawn or midnight. But I need my sleep in order to function!
That’s it, I would say it takes very little of my time up, but it certainly allows me to keep ‘plugged in’ as it were and offers a cleansing element as well as an invocation of the solar force/tipharethic force.
If you want a good walkthrough of these rituals I recommend listening to the segments on them which David Shoemaker has done for his podcast “Living Thelema” as well as his book of the same title. Or indeed pretty much any book on ceremonial magic!
What I have noticed about the rituals.
These rituals have been a part of my life for over a decade. During this time my own understanding of them has grown and completely changed. I have found many people have solid opinions about these rituals but the truth is they are so malleable I believe they take on the practitioners intent and can be utilised in different ways and for different purposes.
For example, the way I practice my daily LBRP is such that I don’t find it banishes all spirits. I find it cleanses a space, makes it balanced and harmonious with divine energy and creates a centre which I can work in. I find that what it banishes is the excess energy I have, the accumulation of psychic energy I have built up or gained from others. Often this is stress, but really it is excitement of any kind- any deviation from a neutral state.
It also banishes leech entities which feed upon the force of the magician as well as any entities which cannot withstand the energy of the archangels. The archangels govern the entire plane of Assiah which is what this ritual effects. It can be modified to banish specific entities, but that is something I will go in to if the need arises for me during these posts.
Most of all the LBRP is inappropriately named because it is my experience that it is also an invocation ritual. The Qabalistic cross at the beginning invokes divine light into the aura and balances it within the body so that the energy is evenly distributed. Upon drawing the pentagrams you are creating sacred space on the physical but in daily practice, you are affirming your entire aura as sacred space. You are creating a container of sorts which is fit to be filled with the light from Tiphareth, the light of the Holy Guardian Angel.
What has really come to the forefront this week is the role the Archangels have in the LBRP. I have found that upon calling them they take some of the excess energy I have spoken about and seem to distribute it around the area in a balanced manner. Energy cannot be destroyed simply transformed and it is my opinion that this is one of their roles within the ritual. They take the energy and sustain their astral forms with it as well as distribute the energy around the area which further fuels the pentagrams and adds to the general charge of the space.
Finally the last qabalistic cross invokes the light of Tiphareth in a much more powerful way in my experience. The hexagrams appear above and below me and I visualize one of myself. I then see light flooding the area. I say see because I mean that it is part visualisation but also part observation, it is strange. I am not sure if it arises from me or if I am perceiving it or a mixture of the two.
Resh is a little simpler, I believe it is an invocation of the Solar force. Each elemental aspect of the solar force as well as an invocation of the Thelemic current- during the adoration segment. I find myself filled with energy after performing this ritual. It feels like the ritual nourishes my soul. Shoemaker goes into detail on how to perform this ritual as more of an invocation of energy rather than just a prayer or recognition of the sun’s everlasting presence. I recommend using these tips to maximize the benefit of this ritual.
All in all whilst I have gone back to the basics I am still cleansing regularly and invoking often. 6 times a day in all (4 if I do the LBRP and then Resh). I believe these two practices are enough to sustain and continue the work on a day to day basis. In fact, I believe if you are ill and really can’t be bothered to do anything else Resh will suffice and allow you to continue a link to the forces invoked.
Next week I’ll be adding a new practice, the post won’t be as long as I won’t have to try and explain two rituals in one space!
As always, the above is my own experience and interpretation of the practices and may not reflect yours or anyone else’s experience. My own conclusions change as I gain new experiences and the above may change in the course of these posts. Please do not treat me as an authority on the subject, I am just someone who does the work instead of simply reading about it.
