𝑩𝑬𝑨𝑵 𝑳𝑶𝑽𝑬𝑺 𝑺𝑶𝑲𝑲𝑨. 

okay everyone, this is inspired by chloe's recent post where she discusses her love for azula and why she wrote her and i was really feeling like going into why i love sokka and why i chose to write him? so yeah feel free to read below if you're interested.

so first, i have been rewatching and reading the comics basically non stop since avatar was available on netflix, and i was interested in writing an atla muse for awhile. but there's something about sokka that is just …. amazing. first, he is so often overlooked by everyone else. i've noticed that nearly everyone reduces him to nothing but comic relief and i'm really unhappy with that. looking back at season 1, there's no excuse — sokka is sexist. that's obvious in the first few episodes but look at the contrast in his growth until the last episode of season 1. like for instance, look at his treatment towards yue and how he protected her! also, i think a big shift in sokka's sexism was meeting suki. while i attribute a lot his own character, i would argue that the most influential person on sokka's character growth is suki. suki opened his perspective and she does that again and again.

but anyway, the reason i truly love sokka is because...he's amazing. he's the son of the chief, he thinks he's going to war...and then he gets left behind. he just….can you imagine training and always being with your dad to suddenly losing him and your mother and having to grow up with your sister? your grandmother? his story just is so full of sadness yet he still remains so strong. he uses his humor as a coping mechanism and god, i can relate to that. i can relate to feeling like you're doing everything by yourself so you became a shell of yourself. you hide your pain. you hold up this facade (i'm not a boy. im a warrior. i'm not a boy. i'm a warrior.) 

and i think one way you can look at him is by looking at his relationships. look how much he loved yue. look at how fiercely he protected katara. watch his banter with toph and aang. look at his love for zuko, how he let him into their circle and trusted him. look at the love that radiates from him and suki (it is pure. soft.) just...how can you look at sokka and love him? that's why i write him. i write him because i love him. because he overcame so much, because he still is loving and happy despite all the pain in his life. because oddly, he gives me hope. i love sokka.

( this is how today is going. for non baristas. you literally Cannot make that into a frappuccino consistency. i sat them insulated in ice for several minutes in an attempt to cool them and it was still the consistency of a particularly thin bisque. )
