1895 Unhackathon
Unhackathon, September 20-21, 2014

Gimp warns me that these files are corrupted. Hehe if only you knew. Tumblr can't upload the 'corrupted files' so I need to export a 'uncorrupted version' from Gimp in order for Tumblr to read it. This is giving me some good programming ideas to implement though!
Unhackathon 2014
As it stands, Unhackathon is still going on, and will be going on for about five more hours. It ended at six in the morning for me though, and with respect to making something meaningful, it was a failure. But, it wasn’t a total failure, as it served the purpose of being a stark reminder that there still remains a lot for me to learn. Not only that, but it also taught me that I should really work on integrating and collaborating with others. So what did I do during the 24 hours I was there? At first I tried making a bookmarks thumbnail preview extension for Chrome, but stopped once the complexity got to the point where I would have to invest vast amounts of time learning about servers. Afterwards, around 4pm, I decided to program something visual with p5.js, and although I did manage to create some interesting output, it wasn’t what I expected to develop, although honestly I didn’t have much of an idea. Then, I tried working on a simple game using three.js but the complexity of it grew far more than what one person can handle in the remaining time. Finally, around midnight, I started working on Socket.io, mainly because a friend of mine was having trouble using it. I followed their tutorial and made a chat program. There were many abstractions, but it was still intriguing.
What did I learn in all of this though?
I've been wasting time with front end development. With respect to design, certainly it's been useful, but with respect to programming, it's been superficial.
I can't do it all myself. The more I program, the more I realize that secluding and isolating myself won't work.
Javascript and Ruby are awesome languages.
So what do I plan to do for the future? Start developing seriously. I really am interested in web apps, especially with some awesome libraries like three.js, easel.js, webGL, node.js, socket.io. I need to stop doing superficial work, which was done in the form of front end development. Finally, I need to start getting seriously involved with back-end development.
Through all of this, I'm just glad that I'm not disheartened and instead feel challenged to do better next time.
