reason: These motherfuckers are insane about each other in a way that makes me insane about them. John is an incorporeal eldritch entity who became bound to Arthur's body and took his eyesight from him. Thus entangled, they have to rely upon each other to survive from the moment they are forced together. They get into SPECTACULARLY vicious fights at least once a season (which the fandom generally refers to as "divorces"), but they're also 110% ride-or-die and ardently support each other through the story's abundance of horrifying situations.

Their love for each other (and they do use the word love, albeit in the context of describing the depths of their friendship) is a key driving force for both Arthur and John's character development, and it leads them both to take absolutely batshit actions with consequences on a cosmic scale. Also, Malevolent's creator, Harlan Guthrie, has stated that although he always intended for John and Arthur's relationship to be platonic, he is a-okay with fans who ship them.
