i have a few friends and we study the same major. we are classmates in almost all of my classes, and they seem to be the chill kind of people.i dont have any other problem with them, they're actually ok it's just that when im with them i hesitate to study hard bc of how chill they are. i dont wanna detach myself from them but i guess i have to take action bc their being so chill is affecting me??
I think you said it best yourself, that you “have to take action”.
Although your question is well meaning, some hard lessons you’ll have to learn: you have to remember that no one else is responsible for your education but yourself. In life as well, you shouldn’t just try and mirror everyone you meet just to fit in with them or for them to like you. It doesn’t matter if your ‘friends’ are chill or if they just party all night, or if they just get high all day. At the end of the day, if you don’t study hard because you didn’t want to disrupt their “being chill” vibes or so that they don’t stop hanging out with you, then when you get a bad mark or fail, they’re not going to be like “oh hey man, sorry you have to repeat because we were being too chill”.
If you try and pin the blame on them, then they’re going to be even angrier, because how is it their fault that you didn’t study for your own test?
Of course, I get that not everyone can stand being alone and some people have this weirdly insatiable need to fit in with others, so you can choose what option you want from the two below.
1. Continue hanging out with them, but you need to make some study time at home.
Firstly, if they’re your real friends, if you want to study to pass your test, they shouldn’t leave you.
If you’re hanging out with them even outside of uni days (like after classes for lunch or dinner is fine), then you need to reduce that time so that you have enough time to study at home by yourself. You don’t need your chill friends to study, you can’t always study with someone (and it doesn’t sound like you have a study buddy by the looks of things). Study intensively because they’re already siphoning away the time you have in the first place.
2. Just literally say that you need to study.
Just to reiterate, if they’re your real friends, if you want to study to pass your test, they shouldn’t leave you.
There might be one or two in the group that are like you - they want to study, but the fact that everyone else isn’t and is literally heading for failure makes them not take any action. If you want to study, then just suggest something even if it’s simple like “hey i’m going to go study for the test next week, does anyone want to come to the library?” and stick to your guns even if no one wants to study.
Hope that helps! I’m sure you already know the right answer seeing how you’ve written the question.
