Back to Cruit island in North West Donegal today. Looks like summer but it was one of those glorious April days year when the sun comes out and the shirts come off. It is possible to walk to the mainland when the tide is low. Cruit Island in the Rosses region of North West Donegal is linked to the mainland by a single lane bridge. An Chruit which is Gaelic for harp possibly referring to the shape of the island although it also means the hump or little hillock. The island is roughly 3 miles long and 1 mile wide and has a population of around 85 people. Not only is it a place of immense tranquility and beauty it is a climbers paradise with over 300 recorded routes. If you are lucky you will stumble across Mr @uniqueascent himself Iain Miller who can be regularly found scaling the granite cliffs. Iain has gained a unique set of skills from over 30 years as a mountaineer and is the Sea Stack climbing King of Donegal. Seeing as though its Saint Patricks day and all this week, seems only fitting to share my latest Gaelic offering from the April issue of @outsidemagazine ‘For Those About To Rock’ a feature on adventure travel in Irelands County Donegal. Its a hidden frontier in the country's far west corner chock a block with everything from wind swept landscapes, to glorious beaches, to surfing, to mountain biking and the piece de la resistance for all you climbers sea stacks. I had an incredible week exploring this countryside for the first time since my childhood. It's a magical place made extra special by my travel comrades @stephanieapearson @uniqueascent @hendrikm.
