Project UNITED: California
from /r/vexillology Top comment: Project UNITED looks at standardizing ***STATE*** and ***TERRITORY*** flags of the United States. The only distinctions in each flag is a symbol of some sort, shown in the blue area, to identify that state. Once all 50 states, the national flag, and all territories have had their flags redone a post including all the flags will be made for those interested in seeing them together. As post are put up, links will be added below so that you can freely go to any redesign, part of the project, that you are interested in! * The following flag is for the state of **California**. The grizzly bear, the state animal of California, portrays strength. Templates works greatly with this using blue, one of the state colors, to signify the sky and sea with the gold, the other state color, grizzly representing the forty-niners and the mineral gold. The red helps emphasis the grizzly pursues of courage lined in white for purity. The star represents the original republic and the now state for which California has become. I chose to do the shading with the gold because when I just did the lighter gold as the only color to make a silhouette it didn’t look as good in my opinion and felt very plain so I think the shading adds something to the design, but again just my opinion. Project UNITED: Massachusetts
from /r/vexillology Top comment: I’m from Massachusetts, and personally I think you should’ve put the Mayflower (boat) for the state symbol, but keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing the new flags you put out there!

Project UNITED: Alaska
from /r/vexillology Top comment: Project UNITED looks at standardizing the *STATE* flags of the United States. The only distinctions in each flag is a symbol of some sort, *shown in the blue area*, to identify that state. Once all 50 states, the national flag, and all territories have had their flags redone a post including all the flags will be made for those interested in seeing them together. As post are put up, links will be added below so that you can freely go to any redesign part of the project that you are interested in! * The following flag is for the state of **Alaska**. The flag is very similar to its current design incorporating *The Big Dipper asterism* in the c*onstellation Ursa Major* which symbolizes a bear, an animal indigenous to Alaska. It also helps novice locate Polaris, *the North Star*, to determine **true** north which can vary from **magnetic** north. This template I think helps with being flipped horizontally to have the white star representing both the state and Polaris. The white star on the red background not only stands out, but like the red arrow on a compass it shows to a novice that Polaris is the true north now. Overall, I tried to stick close to Alaska’s current design as it really is a good flag so it was interesting trying to standardize it.
