Spiral Knights...

- Gakushin Bunken, Koihime Enbu (Unknown Games)
Randomly picked up a 3DS game called “Rodea: The sky soldier” because it peaked my interest (and was cheap) and plated the first two chapters so far
Warning: Opinions listed here might change when I get further in the game!
The controls need some time to get used to (horribly simplified, it’s basically Sonic’s homing attack: the game. You jump, aim where you wanna go, and fly there, plus your attack is literally a Sonic spin dash/homing attack.)
The music is surprisingly nice, it fits that whole “floating islands in the sky” vibe and I like the “fantasy sky kingdom with robots but not steampunk” theme the game seems to have
The character designs I’ve seen so far are nice too, same for their personalities (though I’d be joking if I said they were fleshed out in any way)
The gameplay (being tied to the controls) consists of mostly flying, to explore the islands, collect stuff, defeat enemies, find hidden doors and bosses, and lots of jumping from/to the ground and walls
(I have no idea how I managed to find not one, but two dualscreen handheld games about jumping high a lot that also have nice soundtracks)
But the highlight is the voice acting and cutscenes
...They’re not the best. In fact, they’re giving me Sonic 06/Adventure vibes sometimes. But they’re good in that “it’s not good but not annoying and maybe enjoyable in a charming kids cartoon way” way yknow?
In fact, the whole game feels that way so far
It’s giving me that really charming vibe of a game I would have played to death back on my DSi even though I wouldn’t understand even half of what’s going on or how it functions, just having a good time with a game that’s really no masterpiece but still enjoyable for me, or a dub of an anime show on a kids channel with a simple (slightly overdramatic) fantasy plot, simple but (mostly) likable characters and a simple nice adventure to have
That type of of “not good but still enjoyable for me” y’know?
To summarize: It’s by no means a 10/10 game (I’d give it a 5-6/10 I think) and you’re not missing out on anything great, but if you can tolerate weird controls and enjoy games/shows like I described above why not check it out? And if you don’t like it, it’s pretty cheap anyway so you didn’t loose anything, which basically means you can’t go wrong!
Also you get a gun™️
On today’s list of obscure games I‘ve found years ago and randomly remembered exist:
Penumbear
a puzzle platformer for iOS released in 2013
in which you played as a cute little bear and have to navigate him though the levels with the help of light and shadows- meaning: by using light to cast shadows, you were able to use the line between light and shadow to literally walk on light and solve puzzles while trying to survive all the dangers of this atmospheric, gritty dark world.
The game was quite long, had a lot of secrets (including secret areas and collectibles in the form of teddy bears) and was incredibly challenging.
It is also (to my knowledge) sadly no longer available, and hasn’t been so for years.
However, it managed to get popular enough to warrant it‘s own Wikipedia-Page (which is incredible considering this was not only an Indie-game, but one for mobile) so at least it won’t be completely forgotten: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penumbear

This blog is a mess, check them out (or not, go wild, who am I to stop you. Would be cool if you did, though! Some stuff here‘s a bit important, so if something here comes back to bite you don’t say I didn’t warn ya!)
slightly-gay-pogohammer hat auf deinen Eintrag geantwortet “Ok guys… What is that game you adore and want everyone to play but you...”
Dark Chronicle or Kya: Dark Lineage. Miss my old unknown ps2 babies :(
I can’t say I have ever heard of either of this games. Sadly PS2 games are freaking hard to get nowadays.
