this is a secret santa gift for @especially-espers - drew this before the manga ended. I kinda wanna update this piece after the end, because the last arc and the ending feels really important to Shou as a character... maybe I will update it with a follow-up tomorrow haha

Ritsu:

Headcanon A (realistic): y’all already know i hc ritsu has asperger’s. also since i love appearance hcs, his skin is light tan (gets darker as he gets older), doesn’t burn easily or freckle but has moles

Headcanon B (while it may not be realistic it is hilarious): don’t know if i’d say it’s unrealistic but his hair cannot be tamed. he gave up trying. you cannot tell if he brushed his hair or not because it looks the exact same either way

Headcanon C (heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends): shou, post-canon, remains as his only friend. he still talks to shinji and tokugawa sometimes, along with the awakening lab kids, but he’s not really close to anyone but shou. he’s used to it, but being around all of mob’s friends and not having shou around tends to make him feel lonely and isolated

Headcanon D (unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own): MY BOY GETS COOL STRONG PSYCHIC POWERS TOO!!!! HE’S SUFFERED SO MUCH LET HIM HAVE THIS ONE THING let him be Stronk

Shou:

Headcanon A (realistic): has mongolian ancestry on his father’s side, which resulted in his natural red hair and blue eyes. his skin is very fair and sensitive (i hc he has tons of freckles) and pretty blotchy, his cheeks turn bright red when he’s excited (more akin to his true hamster form)

Headcanon B (while it may not be realistic it is hilarious): basically an internet cryptid. has the humor of a Gen Z kid, makes really weird and vague videos and uploads them to youtube with no context, doesn’t post anything else for 5 months.

Headcanon C (heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends): ritsu is also his only friend. he starts going to ritsu’s school (even though it’s not the closest) and totally does Not fit in. he’s a bright kid, understands the material, just gets overwhelmed with the work and distracted really easily. doesn’t know how to interact with anyone else. there’s all kind of rumors about him. ritsu and shou keep to themselves, eat lunch together on the roof. alone together

Headcanon D (unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own): reigen and serizawa adopt him also teru and he has a nice wholesome family and an older brother to torment

hmm so not to be invested in a character dynamic on main but your EXCELLENT ritsu meta has me thinking that the weight of other people's/societal expections of you, forcing you to be someone you don't want to be, is something him and shou could probably understand in eachother on some level... not that other characters don't have that struggle as well, but those two especially imo...

KFNSDFK tbh i think all three are good examples of how those expectations can effect you in different ways!! shinji was so stressed and repressed because he was pushing himself to live up to the standards his brother set for him, even if that wasn’t what he wanted for himself - it was expected of him by his family and peers. ritsu was also praised for being so “accomplished” but that was all he was - his accomplishments, no personality, no substance, the image that people had of him (and what his parents wanted for him) didn’t reflect what he felt was really him.

and then shou was expected to take after his dad and go along with taking over the world. growing up in that environment, with everyone telling you what your life was going to be before you even lived it, before he ever got to think for himself what he wanted to do. he never had a choice. he had to pretend to be on board with his father’s plans and scheme in secret. dam poor kid never even got a chance to be himself before he was told “this is what you are, this is what you’re going to do”
