Made my way through the entire fortress series by CJ Cherryh (the first four are wonderful, she’s clearly doing a pivot in the fifth one so we’ll see what that turns into eventually even if I wasn’t the biggest fan), and my hold for the twentieth book in the Foreigner-verse just came in.

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher was the tits.

There’s a family on the island that Nathan would swear up and down are vampires if not for the fact that they smell human. When asked about them, Vlad sort of waves his hand airily and says “oh yes, the Addams, no they’re just like that, their great ancestor is one of ours though” which I get to use because one of my character inserts from patrons actually has the last name Addams and truly, I am able to live my best life because of it.

So, not terribly long ago in terms of natural history, several isialnds were colonized by mammoths, either by swimming or times when the sea level was lower due to the ice age.  When they became isolated on those islands, the mammoths then became smaller.

Way smaller.

This little cutie lived on the island of Crete in the mediterranian as little at 11,000 years ago.  There were also Dwarf mammoths in Indonesia, off the coast of russia and the California Channel Islands!  It’s not clear why they went extinct, and many died off well before and after the arrival of humans in the area.

My point is, having died off fairly recently, we do have some remarkably well-preserved remains of these animals, even DNA, which scientists are studying to see HOW such extreme dwarfism happened on a biological level, which means, in the best hypothetical future, WE COULD GMO/BREED TINY MAMMOTHS BACK INTO EXISTENCE.

Another neato fact is that when scientist make genetically modified organisms in the lab, one of the ways to make sure that the new DNA sucessfully attatched is to add some code for a pigment change like GLOWING BRIGHT GREEN in the dark.  this is not harmful to the organisms and makes it easy to see early on if something’s gone wrong.

So in the future, we could hypothetically have pet TINY GLOWING GREEN MAMMOTHS.  HOLY BALLS.
