starting off by circling back to this post, which briefly lists some of his more defining scars because they are in direct relation to carlos' time as a captive, and that I'll be referencing. have a few hcs.
Carlos and his family were moved to the Chilean part of South America when he was very young, and by 1984 he was swept up in the revolutionary left movement, an urban and jungle guerilla organization that gathered a base of support from trade unions, cities, and shantytowns. Carlos is from the latter.
They trained up civilians and children, like Carlos, to counter what was viewed as tyranny. Their numbers fluctuated, in part because of the success of adversaries like the CNI (Central Nacional de Informaciones, the political police and intelligence agency) whose tactics capturing, "disappearing", and torturing information out of the guerilla groups.
His conscription as a child soldier happen before & during Operation Condor (a United States and CIA-backed coup and series of assassinations that supported right-wing dictatorships in South America from '68-'89. the CIA even TAUGHT these guys how to combat guerilla warfare and HOW TO TORTURE) & after Operation Colombo. Carlos has a lot of feelings about the United States agencies, but I'll save that for another time.

The guerillas were not substantial enough in numbers to achieve a total victory. Carlos' group was caught, and after they extracted what they could from the rest of his comrades and killed them, he was kept alive.
Chile was and is afraid. Our fear makes us live half-lives, repressed and suffocated.
The complex that it took place in looked like a stadium-sized gated villa community. Unassuming and inviting from the outside, tall red brick walls.
They didn't bother to ask him any questions. He never knew what the time was because the lights were always kept on. He had to guess by what the soldiers were eating whether it was day or night.
Cattle prod was the tool of choice for the majority of the guards, who taught each other how to torture on his body.
He was kept standing with the other guerillas, hands bound, held at gun point. And there he was made to watch them be taken away a person at a time. Whenever one of them died, he was made to wear the clothes of those he saw get tortured and killed.
He was sat across a table from his leader, the man that had recruited him and saved his life when he was a petty thief. They placed Carlos' hand palm-side down and pinned it through with a knife, binding his other behind his back. A plastic bag from a local alcohol chain was held over the head over his leader, and Carlos was instructed to reach him before he suffocated if he wanted him to live. With his teeth, he tried to remove the knife. He failed.
They would also beat him while he was hanging by his feet or hands, again with their love of electrocution, powerful fire hose water blasting, force him to consume large quantities of liquid for gastronomic discomfort - whatever means until he urinated on himself. They would then degrade him and electrocute him where he was damp.
Force his head into buckets of dubious liquids. Waterboarding was a common tactic for the guards when they were bored, particularly when only Carlos was left. He gave nothing up, not that it mattered. He was more valuable as a would-be example to the rest of the sympathizers.
They had him chained to a metal bed with no mattress or sheets for comfort. They would sit him up, always pulling on his long, neglected ratty hair. Humiliation and degradation of every kind did not work on Carlos, whose survival tactic was an enduringly stubborn sense of humor. It only pissed off his usual rotation of guards. One, in particular, was curious if he could "carve the wiseass out that pretty head". Took a fine carving knife from the guard's kitchen and split his scalp from nape to ear.
Only because they needed him to be alive for his public execution was he kept alive.
