Anyone else's characters get frisky and ignore the plot?
Me: *sitting down to write* These words are coming from my brain. I am in control of this story.
Me: *shouting at my characters 5 minutes later* CAN’T YOU MAKE CONVERSATION LIKE A NORMAL PERSON? STOP ASKING HARD QUESTIONS THAT I NEED TO THINK ABOUT. ALSO STOP TELLING ME THINGS THAT CHANGE THE ENTIRE BEGINNING OF THE STORY.
3863 words of this chapter so far, and Bilbo has insisted on recording every riddle he exchanged with Fingon, and we STILL haven’t got to the calendar discussion that was supposed to be the point of this story. Drattit.
How do I make my characters calm down?
Sometimes you write the story and sometimes the story writes you.

Trying to decide where to cut a scene. Part of me wants to end it on a really dramatic cliffhanger:
Flitwick cleared his throat, looking up. "Class dismissed," he said. "Leave your broken items on your desks and return to your dormitory immediately. Wait there for your Head of House."
However, I have about 130 words following that, showing both James and Lily exhibiting leadership skills in the face of their panicked classmates, and I kind of like it?
Dorcas Meadowes gave a wail of fear.
"It's going to be fine," Evans said loudly, putting an arm around her. "If there were any danger, Professor Flitwick wouldn't have left us alone."
"Nice to get out of lessons early, isn't it?" said James, giving the group of worried Gryffindors a grin that anyone but Sirius might think was real. "You heard Flitwick, everyone. Let's head back to the common room and enjoy our afternoon off. McGonagall will tell us what's up, if it's anything important."
No. NO, Pica. Finish writing the story *before* you start working on the sequel. I don't care what Remus said to you.
