EWAN MCGREGOR Velvet Goldmine (1998) dir. Todd Haynes
I dreamed I was explaining my friendship with Antares and how it ended to someone, and I started crying, so I guess I still have some feelings about that almost 30 years later. Best friend breakups are some of the hardest. So many of my formative memories and early favorites involved her. But things just got too fraught and she kept testing my boundaries until I just couldn’t take it anymore. Maybe I could have handled it better. I don’t know. She probably felt like I abandoned her, and maybe she was right. I was so bad at keeping in touch with people after I left for uni. But it’s a long time too late to do anything about it now, and I doubt the people we have become could be any kind of friends at all. Sometimes there are no good answers.
If you want to know what the 80s were like, I once got the record of the Ghostbusters theme song in a McDonald's Happy Meal.
I have done it. I have become obsessed with something that no one else on earth is obsessed with or probably even cares about. I am a fandom of 1. I spend an absurd amount of time thinking about my pet subject. Some materials related to my obsession are impossible to find. This is my life now.
Always thinking about Nellie and Fae.

i really like how the milkman exists as an entirely fossilized character who now serves no purpose other than to fuck people's wives for the punchline
CONNOR STORRIE Tiffany & Co. — Blue Book 2026: Hidden Garden
Looking at pics of Connor Storrie always reminds me that I need to do my T shot.
I have been trying to wrap my head around how little one-on-one time Shane and Ilya had together prior to the cottage, which means I now know more than I ever thought I would about the NHL regular season schedule. This is the timeline of hookups I came up with (at least for the show; I know it's different in the book):
2010: Summer Toronto
2011: February Nashville
2013: Autumn Montreal
2014: June Las Vegas
2014-2015: 3 regular season games, All Stars, playoffs? awards?
2015-2016: 3 regular season games, All Stars, playoffs? awards?
2016: Autumn Boston (tuna meltdown)
2017: February Tampa Bay, February/March Boston
There were only two seasons where they were hooking up regularly, and those were the two seasons when Montreal won the Cup. I don't know if they were hooking up during the playoffs, since many players traditionally/superstitiously abstain from sex during that time. Both of them may or may not also have attended the MLH awards during those years.
I don't really understand how pre-season exhibition games work (feel free to explain if you know), so there's a possibility they could have met up during that time as well.
So that's a probable minimum of 15 hookups, but possibly no more than 20, over a period of seven years. Maybe 40 hours total spent together off the ice in all that time. Just ... insane to think about.
Jacob Tierney talks about “boring” and “fuck you” meaning “I love you” for Shane and Ilya:
“A really good friend of mine—a person who reads my scripts who's a brilliant novelist named Rainbow Rowell—she read the first episode and she said to me… “just remember that every ‘fuck you’ is ‘I love you,’ and maybe you're saying ‘fuck you’ too many times”
“And I was like oh, that's such a good call. That's a great call. Because it was just a reminder of all of the things they say to each other that are not ‘I love you’ and that are not—”
“Boring, you know, when Ilya calls Shane boring, he's saying he's in love with him. And he's not boring, [Ilya] is endlessly fascinated by Shane. And the only way he can communicate that is by making fun of him and calling him boring, because anything else would rip his soul out through his face.”
“Like that's the idea, and so even the words we use to obfuscate matter, you know?”
(via live Q&A with Stage 32 on March 24, 2026)
Shane Hollander who has been put on a pedestal and made into a model minority since he was still a kid. Whose entire life is a performance, trying to abide by social cues he cannot understand. Who has never known how to be “normal” and spends every waking moment pretending that he is. There is nothing more sacred to him than his privacy. He loves fiercest in hiding not because he is ashamed but because the quiet is freedom for him. Shane who wants to keep Ilya all to himself. Shane who knows coming out means giving to the world the only part of his life that is still his own. Shane is terrified because coming out means losing the image he carefully crafted, to instead be defined by the love that was never meant to be for anyone else.
Ilya Rozanov who has always thrived on attention. Who does everything loudly and does not want to hide his thoughts. Who comes from a household where he was reined in and carefully controlled but still never good enough. Who will chirp and fight just to show that he can, who will take negative attention because at least that means he is controlling his own narrative. He loves fiercest in the open because for him being loud means being free. Ilya who wants to scream his love for Shane from the rooftops because he finally has something to be proud of. Ilya who knows hiding means returning to a cage he spent his whole life trying to escape. Ilya needs to come out because it means finally being known for a love he is proud of instead of the hate he relied on.
Two boys who desperately want to be together and free, but they can’t agree on what that means.
thats what i like to hear 🙂↕️ full article
It's so cool that HR stands for Heated Rivalry and Hollander and Rozanov and Human Resources, the department they'll both have to talk to after the league finds out that two of their employees have been having an undisclosed sexual relationship that may or may not affect the results of two of their billion dollar teams
patti smith, 1976.
Me, every time a pic of Connor Storrie crosses my dash: GOD FUCKING DAMMIT WTF HOW DO YOU LOOK LIKE THAT????
10 Leonard Cohen songs for Heated Rivalry Fans
I know people are putting together playlists for Heated Rivalry, and they mostly include more recent songs (by which I mean "past 20 years" because I am Tumblr Old). I thought I would put some older songs out there for people to check out. One of my useless skills is finding songs by Montreal singer and poet Leonard Cohen suitable for all occasions. Here are a few that feel like they fit (with links to YouTube).
Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye (1967) (Lovers waking together before having to part for an extended period of time.)
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm, your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm, [...] but now it's come to distances and both of us must try, your eyes are soft with sorrow, Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
Story of Isaac (1969) (From the perspective of a son being sacrificed by his father. Some real Ilya and Grigori vibes.)
The door it opened slowly, my father he came in, I was nine years old. And he stood so tall above me, his blue eyes they were shining and his voice was very cold. He said, "I've had a vision and you know I'm strong and holy, I must do what I've been told."
Dress Rehearsal Rag (1971) (About a man in the midst of a depressive episode contemplating suicide.)
Now if you can manage to get your trembling fingers to behave, why don't you try unwrapping a stainless steel razor blade? That's right, it's come to this, yes it's come to this, and wasn't it a long way down?
Lover Lover Lover (1974) (I couldn't help including this due to Shane's horror of the word "lovers", but it is also pretty apt.)
He said, "I locked you in this body, I meant it as a kind of trial. You can use it for a weapon, or to make some woman smile." Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me…
Paper-Thin Hotel (1977) (From the perspective of a person listening in on two people fucking in the next room. Clearly the perfect song for this fandom.)
The walls of this hotel are paper-thin Last night I heard you making love to him The struggle mouth to mouth and limb to limb The grunt of unity when he came in I stood there with my ear against the wall I was not seized by jealousy at all In fact a burden lifted from my soul I learned that love was out of my control
Night Comes On (1984) (The first verse specifically gives me Ilya and Irina feels.)
I went down to the place Where I knew she lay waiting Under the marble and the snow I said, "Mother I'm frightened Of the thunder and the lightning I'll never come through this alone" She said, "I'll be with you My shawl wrapped around you My hand on your head when you go" And the night came on It was very calm I wanted the night to go on and on But she said, "Go back, go back to the World"
Ain't No Cure for Love (1988)
I'm aching for you, baby I can't pretend I'm not I need to see you naked In your body and your thought I've got you like a habit And I'll never get enough There ain't no cure, There ain't no cure, There ain't no cure for love
I'm Your Man (1988) (Just one of my favorite songs of all time.)
I'd crawl to you, baby And I'd fall at your feet And I'd howl at your beauty Like a dog in heat And I'd claw at your heart And I'd tear at your sheet I'd say please, please I'm your man
In My Secret Life (2001)
I smile when I’m angry. I cheat and I lie. I do what I have to do To get by. But I know what is wrong. And I know what is right. And I’d die for the truth In My Secret Life.
Come Healing (2012) (More Ilya and Irina feels.)
O, gather up the brokenness Bring it to me now The fragrance of those promises You never dared to vow The splinters that you carried The cross you left behind Come healing of the body Come healing of the mind
