well, he likely deserved that. the way he sees it he has two choices here:  weather the storm and prove to stephanie ( as he’s been proving to far too many people than he might be able to handle ) that he’s worthy of both her trust and forgiveness, or walk out the door without another look back.   unfortunately for her,  try as he might, he wouldn’t be able to fulfill the latter.   whether either of them like it or not,   stephanie is important to him and he isn’t going to leave  without trying to mend this bridge.  

“  maybe you’re right, steph.  but, i’m --- maybe foolishly, but i’m hoping you’ll find it to be the right one in my case.  i know you don’t want to hear my reasons, but if i had another choice... i wouldn’t have run.  i really would have stayed. ”

the grin that cracks across her mouth, splits the skin of her lips, spreading thin. her head cants to the side at an angle that should be uncomfortable.  the  once chocolate-hued irises swirling in dizzying spirals as they fix upon the researcher, growing wide with  amusement.   

“   we are.  you worse than i.”   long, too long, fingers with sharpened nails to match tap-tap against the metal table upon which alice perches, metal-heeled mary janes clanking against the table’s leg.   “  your tone is different day.  coy, even.    should i be worried,  stephanie?   will you finally play with me?  ”

“ ah,  and it will stop your breath how fast i can be !  ”  hand darts forward to snatch the last pastry in the box, promptly stuffing half of it into her mouth.  as unseemly as it was,  she couldn’t help but laugh with her mouth full of  chocolate eclair.   oh,   if her  mother would see her now---- well, she might even laugh, too,  before  telling her  to mind her manners.    “   fine,  you can have this other half.   if you can catch me, stephanie----  or,  are  your  aged   bones  too creaky  and  muscles  too atrophied to chase me ?  ”

she liked to pack light,   hated  bringing anything that would slow her down.  a few changes of clothes,  her camera,  and her journal  were  among the only things she really needed.  that,  and a one-way ticket to wherever she decided to gallivant off to next.  another thing she hated;  putting a deadline on herself,   cutting a  trip  off for the simple fact that it was time to go home.    as  far as alice was concerned,   home was wherever a comfortable bed and a   decent bakery was.     today,   however,    it would  seem  her  greatest flaw  would derail  this particular trip of hers.    (   you see, alice  was never punctual.  either last minute or not at all.   )   

“    damn, damn, damn !   ”   she collapsed onto one of the benches,  her duffel bag landing with a dull thud next to her feet.   the  bow  holding her hair together hung loosely at the back of her head, one eye without makeup, heels pressing the back of her sneakers down---- she’s really made an effort to get here on time.   

“   hey,  excuse me,   do  you  know if there are any other trains set to leave for zurich today?  you know,   you’re not a ticketing agent, why am i asking you!  ----unless you know. it’d be handy if you did cause knowing me,  i’ll go ask the ticketing agent and be late for that train too cause somehow i’ll end up wandering around for hours being an idiot.   ”
