I love that for most of the book (from Robespierre's pov, at least) he doesn't really seem all that aware that he's grown incredibly powerful, or that people are, like, actively terrified of him, except when the Hébertists from the commune arrest Camille's father in law, and are threatening to arrest Camille, and he gets this really sudden, vengeful vibe of THEY WILL REGRET THIS.
#a place of greater safety#really appreciate the commitment to his characterisation as completely intentionally obtuse#until someone#anyone#comes for camille#also like how it is really clear that being the best friend robespierre ever had is not sustainable in the long run for camille#bc either he “betrays” him#as someone who reflexively revolts against all authority#or he eventually goes down with him during thermidor#(naturally camille takes a third option)#also also the fact that danton gossiping abt camille is part of what seals his fate AND HE DOESNT EVEN KNOW IT#his heart decides something and his head plays catchup and then he tells everyone the head part came first etc etc
