finally reading through pertharite ( with help from my french dictionary! )
sassy french unulfo ( unulphe ) has me feeling a certain way, and not because he's french. a good amount of that abrasiveness was carried over into the original salvi libretto that all subsequent versions draw from, and so it didn't come to me as much of a surprise. yet somehow, i find myself particularly stricken by how handel and haym's unulfo seems ( for lack of a better word ) lobotomised in comparison with corneille's.
really funny how unulfo's name means "bear cub wolf" ( i'm assuming the "un" part comes from "hun," "bear cub," while "ulf" is most definitely "wolf" in old germanic languages ) and he's Little Guy.
What kind of bird would you say Unulfo is? And Eduige?
i have been waiting so long for this. you have no idea.
sooo. unulfo's given me bunting ( genus emberiza ) vibes from the beginning. i don't really have any deeper explanation than that. what kind of bunting he is exactly depends on the production. met unulfo is a crested bunting, glyndebourne unulfo is a cretzschmar's ( quick aside- oh my goodness, that spelling trips me up ), and my own one is a grey.
eduige strikes me as some sort of corvid. either a red-billed chough or some sort of magpie. something about opportunism and the fact that those guys are smart as hell. i haven't done much thinking about her and birds ( but i should do more )
