Unusual Study Tip #1
Pretend that you are filming a "Study With Me" video. Not only does it put you in the mindset for studying and organizing, but it also makes you more focused since no one wants to watch a study video with someone procrastinating.
Unusual Study Tip #2
Work with your schedule. Not just your class schedule (which is important!! pls go to class) but your energy schedule as well. A lot of advice here says stuff like "don't stay up til 3 am" or "ten ways to become a morning person" and that's great, it really is, and if I had more time and didn't have assignments due I would work on that. But the fact of the matter is I need to turn in assignments, I need to get work done, and honestly? I enjoy being awake and having energy. I have the most energy around 10pm to 1am. So what do I do? I use the natural energy my body is giving me. You study way less efficiently when you're tired than when you're not, so work with your body's energy schedule. I wake up at 9 am for class, sleep an hour, go to my afternoon classes from 1-3, eat, sleep until 8pm, then stay up until 5 am. Yes, I know this isn't a health sleep cycle, but it works. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which means no matter how long I sleep I'm still tired. So instead of having a normal sleep schedule and pushing myself through extreme exhaustion at 3pm or 8am or 6pm so I can get to bed by 10 and wake up early, I use what works. DON'T forget to go to class, but don't force yourself to adhere to a schedule which isn't helping you.
UNUSUAL STUDY TIPS
I love reading about study tips in the studyblr community. But we mostly hear the same ones all over again, and they’re good and important, but there is some things we don’t talk about that can actually really give you some “school mojo” and that may help you despite being “studyblr aesthetic”.
Warning : these are own my tips, and they work for me, but I can have a very weird mind, being gifted, and I really function in my own way. So don’t take them for granted, some might not work for you and that is okay !
PS : There will be updates with new tips regularly.
1) Cover your books : I know you love the feeling of that very new fancy book cover and you love taking pictures of it for Tumblr. But trust me, you’ll reread your school book a lot of times, and you’ll carry it in your backpack, and you might end up in the middle of the school year with your book falling apart. I know that now that you’re in college it seems like a silly thing your mom used to do in grade school, but it is necessary. Plastic film is cheap and it is very easy to do, here’s a tutorial. You can also use kraft paper, that is even cheaper. Trust me, I cover everything, even my school diary, even dictionnaries. Once the school year is finished and you know you won’t be reading the book again for some time you can always take off the plastic before putting back on your shelf. And if you plan on selling your old school books, they will be neat and you will get more money for them !
2) Sing your lessons : There is some lessons I just cannot manage to learn. I just stand in front of my textbook like I am going to die. Learning things by heart is really my biggest weakness at school, for example it took me three years to know basic latin declensions. (I’m the worst, I know). There is something really weird that helps me remember that kind of things, and it is singing them. So just put on a tune that you know by heart, preferably a pop one that really sticks in your head like a Katy Perry song for example. Then sing it but replace the lyrics by the things you have to learn, in order. Do it for some time, then try to recite your lesson, formulas or declensions by singing without the music, then recite it again without singing at all. You’ve learn it ! And if you cannot remember it during the test, just sing the song in your head and it will probably magically appear in your mind.
3) One day per page school diaries are the worst : I know since middle school we’ve been told to use these, and I know they’re the one with fancy looks, flowers, tv-shows and shit. But once you get to high school, I highly recommend you to use weekly school diaries. Why? Because everything in school functions by week. Your classes, how you organize your time, your activities, etc. And you need to have a clear view on your whole week if you want to manage your time correctly. I hate to use multiple planners and spend hours writing and drawing on them with multicoloured pencils, I think it’s a waste of time, but if you have just one great weekly school diary, then you will be able to organize things very simply in your life -and your mind. Choose a solid one and not too big but not too small so you have enough space to write in it.
4) Do not use more than 4-5 colours in your notes : Yes, colors will help you with reading your notes and clearing your mind. But too much colour will get you lost. Your notes are not a work of art, your notes are not there to be tumblr-fancy, they’re here to be simple, and clear, and fast. Personnally, I like to use the four simple colours (blue, green, red, black) + a more “special” one (i like purple or pink, sometimes orange). Trust me, having a hundred Staedtler pens is not useful, and spending that much money on pens will probably not get you higher grades.
5) Use an universal colour code : Here I’m mostly talking for people in high school or taking a lot of different subjects. So, I was talking about notes and how simple they must be, well I think it must be the same in every subject. I talked about it earlier on my blog, but I think setting colours for some things is important and even more useful if you use the same colour code for every subject. For example, for me green is associated to dates and time, and no matter if I’m studying history, philosophy or english, I know that when I see something in green it will help me locate myself through a period or keep track of a story.
6) Watch movies : It is not because I am a cinema major I promise ! Okay, a little, but trust me on this. You may feel like you don’t have the time for a movie, because yes it takes 2 hours most of the time and you think spending these two hours on studying might be more useful to your studies. On a short term period it might be true, but on a more global view, you might be wrong. Movies involve a lot of parts of your mind because they are a very complex combination of different arts and they are an living organ with various points of view. Watching movies helps you build a strong general knowledge and be culturally aware, and that is one of the most important part in finding a job in the future ! Being aware of movies, classical ones, older ones, intelligent ones, is part of making you a smart person ! You don’t need to be a film major like I am, or a movie buff, but just sometimes watch a quality movie, may it be on the same topic as you are now working on or not, will make you a better student and a better job applicants -a better person.
