Favorite fic this year: Dark Silver by @upagainstabookcase
#41: Favorite Fluffy Tropes Fake married/fake dating. Because I often find myself attached to repressed characters, and this is a great way to encourage them to move beyond their own boundaries. For science. For a friend. To save humanity. And then they realize they are actually in love and I start giggling. I'd mention more, but I instead keep thinking of FAVORITE tropes, and that's not the same. Too many of my actual favorites are angsty as hell. #11: Least Favorite Trope/Scenario All human. High school. Ooc. I'm sure if it's written well enough by an author I trust, I might try it, but these are the labels that make me steer clear of a fic. I read fantasy and scifi. I often enjoy stories that don't focus on the fantasy or scifi aspect, but I get offended when people pluck it right out. Ooc speaks for itself really. Unless the AU of the story makes believable changes to the character though circumstance. That's different. But right out the gate, just because? No. #32: Favorite AU tropes I prefer canon divergence to throwing characters into a new world. I can get very attached to the way characters developed specifically within their world, so I prefer to have that played with rather than erased entirely. That said, I do have a few crossover universes that appeal to me, and generally grant some leeway so that a character's backstory can resemble what it was in their canon world. So I like a general Fantasy AU where you throw in magic, swords, and dragons. Take any male character and turn him into a merman. I will be all over it. Mermen are underrated.I also love Pacific Rim AU's because watching characters you love meld minds and fight giant monsters is fun.
Well I’ve just seen that I’ve been tagged by @upagainstabookcase 1. How was your day? My day is actually pretty good! I’ve been proper ill this week, and yesterday was the first day I could get out of bed, but I’m actually functioning today and I’m heading back to uni :))
2. Which song would be your theme song? I’ve come up with three, and they’re all v cliched but there we go. Shake It Off by Florence + the Machine was the first one that came to mind, because that’s pretty much my go to response to most things. The other two were Corner by Allie Moss, and Just A Little Girl by Amy Studt which was absolutely my anthem when I was about 13.
3. What’s your favourite quote from a Shadowhunters cast member? I’m pretty much going to copy Asha here and say Matthew Daddario telling fans that they’re not rubbish, they’re wonderful. I mean he’s wonderful. As for an actual quote from the show, then Jace’s line “I was raised by Valentine, and a pair of baby booties can’t change that” is stellar because? what? Jace? what are you trying? to say?
4. What do you do when you’re alone at home? Sing. Having lived in dorms for the past two years I’ve finally moved into a house and I’m loving being able to put records on and sing along obnoxiously loud to Patti Smith. Recently I’ve just enjoyed being able to make noise so much that I’ve taken to just musically narrating my actions. Like singing about making tea to the tune of the national anthem. Yeah. When I’m writing that, it seems weird…
5. If you could have any url, what would it be? I am in awe of people who work quick enough to get character names as their url. Well done team. Just straight up jemcarstairs or inejghafa or anything along those lines would be the dream.
6. What’s your favourite au/hc for your otp? My favourite au is straight up Full Circle (now mentioned upagainstabookcase three times now, jeez) for Herongraystairs. AU wise, it’s everything I want for the three of them, and all the dynamics are glorious. The last few chapters of the fic always seemed like such a shame for me, but apparently this is getting changed around which is v exciting.
7. When someone asks for new movies or tv shows to watch, what is the first thing you tell them? Orphan Black. Always whatever forever. The majority of my friends fall into at least three categories: feminists, scientists, actors. Orphan Black ticks all the boxes. Watch it watch it watch it.
8. Do you use emojis a lot? I’m a linguistics student, and I find emojis endlessly fascinating, which maybe isn’t the point? My little sister has this whole code for when you can use certain emojis and it’s just so weird and interesting. So yeah, I do use them, but I overthink them waaay too much. They’re not a natural thing for me.
9. Which colour do you like to wear? Autumnal colours are my go to. Dark greens and burnt oranges and things like that. And I have this pair of dungarees that I practically sleep in now, so a lot of denim.
10. Do you have / wanna get any tattoos? I have three tattoos, and I’ve got another booked in for a couple of weeks away. I’ve got Snufkin’s hat from the Moomins on my wrist, a little koi carp on my ankle, a Patti Smith / elder futhark rune on my knee. The next one I’m getting is the last one that I have planned for now. It’s going to be a lightbulb on my upper arm, for a Baha’u’llah quote “love is light in whatsoever house it may shine”. I’ve been working on the design for weeks now and I’m finally happy with it.
11. Who is your favourite person? I’m ridiculously spoilt when it comes to the women in my life. My sister, my grandma, my best friend, my mother. All of them are machines. I also find it quite easy to be inspired by a lot of the people around me, from friends to lecturers to people on tv. I can’t pick a favourite. Too many wonderful humans. I’m gonna tag my loves on here, and hope that they forgive me for my lack of communication recently! @rosecolorednights and @onadatebythechocolatelake
August 2015′s spotlighted author is...
upagainstabookcase (aka ashesandhoney)!
Upagainstabookcase “writes copious amounts of fanfic” and “rambles on and on about characters and the worlds they inhabit.” They write mostly for The Infernal Devices and Jessa, Wessa, Herongraystairs, and Heronstairs fic. Upagainstabookcase was chosen this month because of their unique writing style and spot on characterisation, even in AU fics. They also write a variety of pairings, so it’s likely that at least one of their fics will spark your interest!

Hi Clara :) I hope I'm not bothering you but I'm wondering if you know any young aspiring writers here that I can share my writing with?
Hello there! Don’t worry, you’re not bothering me at all. In fact, you can message me anytime regarding anything and I’ll answer as soon as possible. :)
Hmm, that’s an interesting question. It depends what you mean by young. If you mean teenagers, I have one person for you. If you mean people in their 20s, I know several.
First of all, can I recommend myself? I love talking about writing, if you haven’t figured that out yet, and I’m open to anything. Tag me in posts, send me stuff, anything! I’d love to help in whatever way I can.
The first person I can tell you about is my best friend Nicole from herondalerinq. She doesn’t talk about writing on her blog, but trust me, she’s good and she has some amazing fic ideas which she doesn’t feel motivated to write. (I’m glaring at you Nicole)
Now to the other people. First up is upagainstabookcase. She writes some of the best novel-style TID fics I’ve ever read and likes talking about writing process and world building and can give some very good advice if you ask her. I can tell you for a fact that she’s helped me a lot.
This next person has all my respect because she’s the only person I’m aware of that has read The Shadowhunter’s Codex and that is vivacephoenix. She’s the one you can count on when coming up with headcanons, because she knows the canon better than anyone else. She’s also the person to go to if you want someone to point out what works in your story and what doesn’t.
elanorjoy is another great person who just returned from a one week break which turned into a two months break. I have seen her throwing ideas around with other people and pointing out things regarding characters and world building. She can also encourage you to keep going with your story when you feel like you won’t make it.
I’m not sure if that’s exactly the answer you wanted. Keep in mind that all these people I’ve mentioned are fic writers for the TMI/TID fandom, but if you were expecting a different answer, I’m sorry.
I recommend these people to share your writing with because they’re all amazing and they have created this wonderful, loving environment where you can swap ideas and ask for advice. They’ve welcomed me in this environment and they have helped me a lot as I struggle to start writing a novel-style fic of my own and I couldn’t be more grateful.
I was tagged by the lovely hollendrodens, thank you sweetie! ♥
You can tell a lot about someone by the type of music they listen to. Hit shuffle on your device and write down the first ten songs then pass it on to other people. One Rule: No skipping.
