I'm honestly pretty surprised that Amazon has allowed Upload to have 4 seasons so far because it really makes a point of going after the absurdity of AI and the predatory business structures/personal greed associated with it (not to mention driverless cars, vanity plastic surgery, and reality TV), especially this season. I hope the execs there never realize what it's actually about so that the show can continue--it's pretty great.
Upload writers, don’t piss me off!!!!
I really liked Upload when it first came out, and I still like it. I still find all the protagonists very charming.
But I feel like in the 3 years since the show started airing, the reality of the modern internet has rapidly drawn dramatically closer to the dystopia depicted in the show. The show's become far more depressing to watch, even though the tone of the show hasn't actually changed at all.
Like, back in the 80s/90s, movies about cyberpunk dystopias felt like they were taking place at least 150 years in the future.
That's how this show felt when I first started watching it, but now most of the "future horrors" in the show feel like they're just a couple bad midterm elections away from becoming a reality.
For example, a recent episode shows a teen trying to watch the news, but the actual news is so paywalled that he must resort to getting news via a youtube/tiktok type influencer whose gimmick is reporting the news while doing makeup tutorials.

"In 2033, humans can "upload" themselves into a virtual afterlife of their choosing. When Nathan dies prematurely, he is uploaded to the very expensive Lakeview, but then finds himself under the thumb of his possessive, still-living girlfriend Ingrid. As Nathan adjusts to the pros and cons of digital heaven, he bonds with Nora, his living customer service rep." [Wikipedia]
Anti-capitalist comedy in a similar vibes/style to The Good Place or Schitt's Creek. Can't say much because the joy is in the experience, because it's... it's not exactly feel good because they remind you of so many things wrong with the world, but they do it with humor. It's very 'lol, isn't this messed up or what?', and it works.
'Heaven' isn't affordable to everyone! there's different places depending on how much you are willing to spend, and even in the exclusive ones there are things you need to pay for separately. It's such a cool concept.
The cast is pretty solid, but the standout for me is Allegra Edwards, who plays infuriating rich-girl Ingrid. The character could've been classmates with Alexis Rose, and Edwards much like Murphy is able to sell this character that could've easily been insufferable to watch. Zainab Johnson (Aleesha, Nora's co-worker) nails her role with a particular brand of humor, and she has incredible presence too.
