Vigil for David Brown this Saturday 10 December outside Middlesbrough Jobcentre at 12pm - 1pm

World Cup winner Valdes proves Boro doubters wrong
"As long as you are in goal we will never win. Bring back dimi. Victor. Go back to Spain. You're the worse keeper I have seen In a Boro shirt."
Such were the opinions of commenter 'Iamboro' on the Evening Gazette website just three weeks ago..
There is no denying that Valdes had a tough time at the start of his career - but goals were being shipped as a result of collective team failures not goalkeeping errors. While Valdes looked at times shaky, he was taking time to adapt to playing behind, shall we say, a less-solid defence than he has spent his career with,
Valdes's only mistake had been to take the place of fans' favourite Dimi Konstantopoulos. Thus he was given no leeway by Middlesbrough fans looking for a scapegoat for Boro's poor start to the season. Forget that the man is the most decorated footballer ever to pull on a Boro shirt - one World Cup, a European Championship, three Champions Leagues and a host of domestic titles in Spain - he had unfairly usurped a hero of the promotion campaign, he was a Johnny Come Lately to the cause and therefore not to be trusted as the custodian of the Boro goal.
But he who laughs last, laughs loudest. And while I'm not suggesting that anything has been achieved yet, the former Barcelona man can afford himself a wry smile at how things have turned around. Middlesbrough have conceded just one goal in their past three games - including trips to the Emirates and the Etihad - due to improved defensive performances - and the form of Valdes. World-class saves to deny Arsenal Sanchez against Arsenal, Josh King of Bournemouth and Manchester City's David Silva came at crucial times in those games and helped ensure that Boro came away from that tricky run with five points, rather than the none that they might well have done but for his interventions.
You would be hard-pressed to find anyone questioning Aitor Karanka's No 1 now.
Another man who enjoyed a redemption of sorts against Manchester City was Marten de Roon. The Dutch midfielder's time on Teesside has been hampered by injury and he had failed to win over the Boro faithful; though again that was in part down to being part of a team that was collectively poor, and also his not being Grant Leadbitter.
But he has grown in stature in recent weeks, putting in an excellent performance in the heart of the midfield at the Emirates and performing admirably against Bournemouth. But then came his last-minute intervention against City; a bullet header that secured an unlikely point, and a guaranteed place in the affections of the Boro faithful.
There has been, in those three games, a general upturn in performance of all Middlesbrough's players. It is almost as though it has finally dawned on them just what is required to succeed at this level, that intensity is all if they don;t want to be swept aside. It is a lesson they have learned the hard way, but as Victor Valdes has found, it is never too late to start putting things right.
The match is over, the Boro is going up! now back to Badminton Horse trials :D
